There is a lot to recommend about the current Chevrolet Cruze. It’s handsome, spacious inside, and offers up to 42-mpg on the highway when you opt for the Eco model. About the only thing lacking is some pulse-quickening excitement. That could change as Chevrolet prepares to give the strong-selling Cruze a mid-cycle makeover. While there is no official confirmation, these artist illustrations of a long-rumored Coupe SS variant provide a tantalizing hint as to what might be in store.
The Coupe SS
From these renderings, it appears the Cruze Coupe could adopt much of the broad-shouldered design of the upcoming full-size Chevrolet Caprice sedan. The front fascia is blockier and blunter, and a tidier chrome grille with three center strakes and the Chevy bowtie emblem in the center replace the split grille of the current model. At the back there are dual exhaust tips peeking out from a (modest) rear diffuser. A rear spoiler and more rectangular-shaped taillights give the rear of the Cruze some extra muscle. It’s subtle – and not going to worry the likes of Ferrari – but we like it.

What we like even more is the thought of something feistier under the hood. These Cruze Coupe illustrations show the car in Super Sport (SS) format, which we’re hoping means GM’s potent turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 (found in everything from the Buick Regal to the Cadillac ATS) might work its way into the Cruze. If it does, expect engine output to hover somewhere in the region of 250 bhp. General Motors has good recent track record when it comes to offering a nice choice of transmissions. We’d expect a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic with some form of paddle-shifters to be available.
A sportier suspension setup, sharper steering, and beefier brakes would round out the mechanical changes. The cabin of the Cruze SS would likely include leather seating, unique badges and stitching, and the ubiquitous metal-finished gas, clutch and brake pedals. If it’s headed for production, the Cruze Coupe SS should make its first official appearance early next year during the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

Thanks `Lou for being the first to post your comments...I'm sure they will be in the $20K - $25K range..., but with 250 HP & a six speed (?) it should be a fun ride ?
Wish it was a RWD...
& it would be more fun I am happy that GM is still making a coupe
I think there's a Market for a new Monte Carlo Coupe, even with the new 3.6 direct injected six...(In a Monte it would run in the 13's at over 110 in a `1/4 mile)

"2 dare 2 `dream in SpaceVision"
4-Sure (LOL)
So we have the new RWD V8 car AND the Cruze SS in this thread?
Cruze SS replacing the Cobalt? I'm happy with that. The cruze is actually a really nice car for the money.
And I'll never say a 4-door RWD V8 car is a bad idea.
