Speed traps to catch speeding motorists are probably considered a relatively modern phenomena. However, as early as 1910 the Police were checking the speed of motorists. Detroit motorcycle cop in 1910... A Detroit police officer in 1910 on a Detroit Police Department motorcycle. Detroit's department was an early pioneer in motorization.

Lol, I play forza3 quite a bit, on the loading screen when it loads the tracks, it shows a readout of some automotive history. I saw on there that the first speeding ticket was given in 1900 for going 45mph through the main road in Denver Colorado.

I looked up the inflation to convert $5 in 1910 money to today's equivalent. This is copied from http://www.westegg.com/inflation/ I thought it would be an interesting comparison to see the "actual" cost.
