You aren't kidding Space. The thing that drives me crazy is the fricking oil tycoon Trillionaires.... yes, that's Trillion... witha T. Their kids' allowances could pay off the national frickin debt. But they hike up prices so 2007 Q1 they can make umpteen billion more dollars. Meanwhile the poor get poorer, the middle class get poorer, and the rich (like Bush) get richer. Coincidence? I think not!

Gas could seriously be $1 less per gallon without the oil tycoons loosing much money. They show off the new oil discoveries chart dropping like a stone.... but Americans fail to realize that it's not imperative to find new discoveries when over 75% of already discovered reserves aren't being seriously utilized. Especially when new technologies allow old deposits to be nearly 90% recovered, whereas past abilities only allowed us to recover approximately 30%.... And these new technologies add very minimal amounts to the cost of recovering oil that was previously just left there, considered unrecoverable.

You think the government is bad? The government is actually doing better than ever to limit the exploitation of the lower to middle class by big business..... Yet we're still here stuck paying nearly 2.50 a gallon.

oops, did I just get started? --- lol

i dont understand why the price of gas has to be so high!!

How Gas Prices Work by Kevin Bonsor and Ed Grabianowski

Gasoline is the bloodline that keeps America moving. Our personal vehicles alone guzzle 65 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel each year, and that number is projected to increase by 2.6 percent each year. Tracking gas prices can feel like a roller coaster ride. They're down a little one month, up the next, before shooting up more than 50 percent in a year. Plus, they're different depending on where you look. Other countries, and even other states and cities, can have very different gas prices from your local Gas-N-Go. To the average person, it probably seems as though there's little rhyme or reason to how gas prices are determined. In this article, we will look at the forces that impact the price of gas at the pump, and we'll find out where your gas money actually goes.
Americans have an insatiable thirst for gasoline, and with sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) continually growing in popularity we are only getting thirstier. Just look at the roads and highways and you'll see that a severe gas shortage would practically cripple the country. Americans drive more than 2.5 trillion miles per year in automobiles, light trucks and SUVs, according to a MEMA report. That's equal to 14,000 round trips to the sun. Today, we drive almost twice as much as we did in 1980 (1.5 trillion miles).

10 Fuel Saving Tips You Can Do Now
Pat Goss

There are lots of ways to improve fuel economy and lots of ways to waste money trying to improve fuel economy. Not the least of which are miracle fuel improvers. They don't work, don't waste your money. Now you may have a diesel engine and you may be tempted to run that diesel engine on vegetable oil. Well don't do it; it will work for awhile but it could cause internal engine damage from deposits over the long haul. And remember if you live where it gets chilly in the morning, that vegetable oil could look very much like lard on a cold morning, and the engine isn't going to run.
Something else to be concerned with, most parts of the country have new fuel, it's called E10. It's 10 percent ethanol, 90 percent gasoline. Now ethanol is a renewable resource and it cleans up tail-pipe emissions but it lowers fuel economy. And don't confuse it with E85 which is 85 percent ethanol and must only be used in cars that are flex-fuel capable.
Now some of the practical things: Tire pressure; check it regularly; set the tires to the specification inside the door of your car. Clean fuel filter, good spark plugs. And there are some sensors that can dramatically reduce fuel economy. These are: inlet air temperature sensor; oxygen sensor; mass airflow sensor and no, don't look for codes because they can be out of spec and reduce fuel economy without setting codes. Dirty anti-freeze will do it as will a bad coolant temperature sensor or a bad thermostat that makes the car run too cool or makes the computer think the car is running cooler than it should.
Air filters should be replaced when they look like this. And this sucker is going to cost you 10 to 12 miles to the gallon, never let your air filter get that bad. Heavy oil, a lot of you seem to think that that's better for an engine, well it isn't. The only thing thicker than recommended oil is harder to push through the engine. That requires power and that reduces fuel economy. The battery if it's not in good condition. That will cause the alternator to charge all the time, trying to charge the battery. That consumes power and that reduces mileage.
And last but not least, all that junk in the trunk. Get rid of it because you are paying for every mile that you haul it around.

I've been doing some estimates on my Monte Carlo. Driving at 69 or so MPH with around 33 pounds of tire pressure I got approximately 26.1 MPG. This is best case-circumstance all highway (allthough rather hilly). So last week I took the tires up to 38 poundsand did it again. Best case the car reported around 26.4 to 26.6, so let's call it a half a MPG improvement. My goodyear eagletires (17" stocker rims) say they can go to 44 psi, so they should still be ok for even wear at 38. I then reduced my speed to 65 mph, and my mileage rose to 27.2 or so. That's one MPG of improvement for a 3 minute pressure correction, and the sacrifice of watching people pass me. (is it just me, or does anyone elses throttle foot tense up when a junker Cavalier passes you?) The car is all stock, air cleaner and exhaust, so I'm going to get a K&N stock drop in replacement and see how much that helps. I just did a full detail, we'll see if the slickery finish helps with the mileage at all
