Exclamation Purchasing a new monte Carlo!

Hey folks, just about to get back into the monte carlo family in less than a week. Looking at an 06 Monte Carlo ss, red paint (unchipped) interior still in perfect condition, I have yet to check the engine maintenance it considering I do all of my own car work excluding major engine or transmission jobs. The car is VERY reasonably priced 1500$ below Kbb retail ($9,444 to be exact) according to the dealer and site there was only 1 owner whom the dealer told me loved the car very dearly. so far so good right?

the catcher.......

The car has got 115k miles and no warranty. Ive heard horror stories about the transmissions on these not making it past 150k. ALSO my 2001 monte carlo didnt make it past 110k after my head gasket blew and i was forced to sell it.. the SS trim is very hard to find in my area and this one is the nicest price. Is there anyone with any advice to what i should do? thanks

Welcome to the Forum

A nice 06+ SS is extremely hard to come by so, IMO, if it looks good I'd go with it. Never know when and where you're going to come across another one as nice just like it. Purchased my 06 two years ago; 61k miles, $15k. I traveled to look at two reasonably priced black ones, 3.5 hours and 5 hours away, and went with one of them. The few that were available closer to home were priced high.

I had great luck with my 03 Monte, and have so far with my 06 *knock on wood*. Others have as well but some have not had such good luck with theirs. I had 150k miles on my 03 and it still ran like new with no major issues. My 06 is currently at 83k miles. I think it all depends on the car and how it was taken care of from day one.

1500 is about the cost of a tranny rebuild think of it that way however i would believe it was a highway car most of its life if it has that many miles and is clean just have a tranny rebuild fund and do it if you love it

Then it would be really easy to determine if any transmission maintenance has been performed. If the previous one owner really loved the car as much as the seller is alluding to he may have recorded any maintenance in a log book / owners manual and would have left it it in the glove box for the new owner to have. The dealer could provide you the owners contact info if they think you are serious about purchasing the Monte, or you would be able to look him up on a DMV site with the cars vin. # info and bounce a few questions off of him. And it would not hurt to pull the tranny dip stick and scope out the fluid level, for color and a burnt smell. Dealers usually change the engine oil, but not tranny fluid. So I would bet you can get a glimpse of the the tranny's potential condition. Maybe he already had the tranny changed to.... I would drive it at least 30 miles to get the tranny components and fluid warmed up to see if any issues manifest themselves that one would not see with a trip around a few blocks. Pull some hills, do decent hard take off's nothing crazy and see if any obvious issues appear. Hope all works out well, sounds like a potentially nice Monte SS to be had.
