Default New member, verge on buying first monte.

Hey guys, new member here although I have read plenty on these forums. My previous car was a 97 Chevy Malibu. I've always been a Monte Carlo fan and I have always wanted to own one. Im getting my license back sometime late March/ early April. It's a long story. I have about $3000 so far put towards a car and would love to pick up a Monte. I have my eyes set on anything from 86-88 SS models. The reason I havent bought one yet was because I'm not sure what to look out for before purchasing one. ie common problems to look for before buying. I've also seen plenty of 2001-2003 monte's that I also like. I didnt like the "lumina" style Monte's so I would prefer none of those. My dilemma right now is whether if it's worth getting an 86-88 ss or if I should wait and spend a little more for a 2001-2003 Monte. Nice to meet everyone here and get to know everybody and their Monte and I cant wait til I pick mine up. Thanks alot in advance for any help.

both the 4 th gen and the 6 th gen are great looking cars ( I really like all the gens ) but the 4 th and the 6 th are my favorites if your looking at the the 4 th gens go online and make sure that it is a true SS (Vin decoder ) because there are allot of fakes . on the 6th gen make sure it has the recall work for the steering wheel done or get it done there is a ton of great info on here and best of luck !!
welcome to the family..

Thanks Blazed. I love what you did with your 2001. Looks great. I have seen one down the street (87, 4th gen) for sale with almost 200k on it and he wants $1000 for it. I took a quick glimpse at it before and the only rust is on the doors and the panels. I believe he said the bottom is fine but I'm afraid 200k is a bit too many miles that I'm looking for. I'm located in Massachusetts and I'm willing to travel anywhere in the state, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Maine for a good condition 4th gen for $3000 or so. I'm not sure if someone here can help me through that since craigs list has been my only search source with no such luck at the moment.

I love 'em all too, but if I was looking for more of a daily driver, I'd go with a 6th gen. I like the 4th gens, but knowing me I wouldn't drive it much, because nice ones are getting fewer and fewer everyday. I already drive my Monte sparingly, because its a Pace Car. I can just imagine what it would be like with a 4th gen SS.
Welcome to the site. A lot of great, helpful people here. I also joined before I bought my Monte and they helped with the search.

Sounds good. But for the money i have, a 6th gen might be a little over what I was hoping to pay. You wouldnt have a 4th gen as a daily for what reasons?

I saw one today on the side of the road in a driveway for sale. 197k on it. But the tranny was replaced. The frame isn't rotted or rusted. Just around the wheel wells. The trunk and hood aren't even rusted. He's asking under $2000 I believe. Sign was wet. How fo I post pictures? And how do I get rid of rust around the rear wheel wells? I know the front I can replace the fenders.
