I actually like the 3400. I've had this engine in one vehicle and my dad has had it in two. The only thing I had to watch was the intake manifold gaskets (changed them once on every single one), but that's an issue on 3800s too. I've heard of head gasket problems, but we never had one go out on the three 3400s I've been around. My dad's '98 Venture 3400 went 280,000 miles before it died and I blame that on his insistence on using 20w50 oil.
My dad currently has an '02 Monte Carlo LS and I, of course, have the 3800 in my Pace Car. I've driven his car A LOT. Sure the 3800 is a little quicker, but at the end of the day, if I go on a long highway trip, I don't even miss the extra power but his 3400 gets 27 mpg to my 23.5 mpg. On a side note, I've taken over most of the maintenance on his car and make sure it gets the correct weight oil.

hello everyone .my name is vincent i live in omaha ne . i recently picked up a 2000 monte SS from a local ford dealer here . it has 141000
miles on her but im not worried the 3800 v6 is bullet proof. i can see why
these cars are so popular . they ride nice get good gas milege and you have a ton of interior room . and this car is loaded with all the options
including a moonroof so im going to have fun with it in the spring and summer. its white with a black leather gut .
