Default new guy

My name is ken and I just acquired a 1997 Monte Carlo. My aunt drove the car up until last week when she noticed It was running rough so she brought it to me to look at. Long story short the engine was full of foamy oil so I figured it was most likely a head gasket and took the car off her hands with the intention of swapping the motor with a 1996 3.1 from an Oldsmobile station wagon I have access to. Does anyone here know about the interchangeability of these two motors? Also If i cant swap them how long is too long for letting that motor sit with foamy oil in it. It's been a week and it will be a couple days before I can flush it with some kerosene. Thanks for any help with this

Before I would go thru the trouble of swapping motors I would run a compression check on each cylinder. The 3.1 was notorius for the lower intake manifold gaskets going bad. Alot easier to put intake gaskets on than swapping motors. Just did them on my sons lumina adn it took about 6 hours to fix.

the '96 3.1 will work, im pretty sure everything should bolt up & plug in, including the wireing harness.

thanks for the help guys. I will do a compression check today after work. If i get a lame hole I will use that olds engine. If not I guess it's time to yank that lower intake gasket. You think I should flush that engine with parts cleaner and kerosene or just put it back together and get an oil and coolant flush from my local garage?
