Cool Long time reader - first time poster (question about switching to older SS)

Hi everyone.

I just want to say this forum's been crazy helpful for years with pretty much everything I've had to work on or thought about working on in my 2002 SS. I don't know why I never registered or became part of the community until now.

I really want to switch from my 2002 to maybe a 1986. I know they're RWD. I've never driven one in winter, but I get 50/50 from people saying either it's not a big deal or it's certain death. Thing is I can't do the two cars thing. It's got to be a 24/7/365 daily driver. Am I being foolish here? I saw a thread on another forum where a guy sprayed his with a bed liner paint job and uses it as his winter car.

My 2002's transmission is going and I don't feel like putting $2,000 in to fix it if I have other options. Plus you can't beat the look of those older models.

Thanks to anyone who reads this and I'm glad I finally registered, haha.

They are tough to drive 24/7/365. They are older cars, inefficient, heavy, and with that age, you will be doing a lot of maintenance on almost everything on the car.

There is nothing wrong with RWD in the winter. My DD Camaro is RWD, you just NEED a dedicated set of snow tires, so prepare to have 2 sets of rims.

What are the reasons you can't do the 2 cars thing? Because finding a cheapo beater that you can fix pretty much everything on (think 90s civic, accord, camry, cavalier, etc) while you save up for a nicer fun car would be the best of both worlds.

what shape is your 02 in?
investing in a trans rebuild is part of the plan of my build, so wondering why investing $2000 is something you don't want to do
