Hi all, newbie guy here.
Hi everyone, new guy here, got some questions.
Not new to car mechanics, been a Chrysler guy for a long time, been working on cars for a long time, got a few questions for GM experts.
We bought my son a 79 Monte Carlo . It has a V6 in it. Emission sticker says 3.3. OK. so. I was just doing some reading for some repairs i am going to do to it and found some odd things.
Info states it is based on the Chevy small block, with lots of shared items from it. ok cool. To me that means distributer in back of the block.
It overheated the other day so i go to the parts store and get a thermostat and some other things for a tune up. There just happened to be a guy with a 79 Malibu there getting stuff, he said he had a V6 in it too.
And i walked by it on the way out, he had the hood open. His V6 had the dist in the rear.
The Monte has its dist in the front, a electronic one, kinda at a angle. The thermostat is mounted verticle in the intake manifold behind it.
Is this a Chevy engine in this car or has it been replace by a Buick or Olds engine? Is there any way to tell from casting numbers etc?
