Default Gear shift sticks

My husband owns a 2003 Monte Carlo...his gear shift is locked in park...he puts his foot on the brake...pushes the button on gear shift and it doesn't want to move out of park? What could be the issue here?

The shift cable could be disconnected from the shifter.

Sounds to me like a defective shift interlock switch.

Sometimes if you let it warm up with the motor running it helps, also turn the wheel back and forth then straight it might help too.
Then once it is free open up the shift area and check for debris, clean the inside and there maybe a solenoid in there that is bad too. good luck
