Do these repair prices look right
Hey all, I'm a new member, just bought a 2000 MC SS for my son - a ton of miles - 200,000. but mint inside and exterior -1 owner car w/3800. My mechanic looked at it and said - Wheel bearing - $140, axle-225, bushings-275, o/i tie rods-285, upper intake-475, pan gasket 350. Tranny was replaced 2 years ago. Do these numbers look about right to you ..

Thanks for the reply - I know there's a problem with the intake after so many miles on this engine and the $50.00 oil pan gasket is a @#$@ to replace. Anyone experience a steering rack leak problem - one guy said leakes the other said it was OK - what did you pay to replace it? one place wanted $750.00 for a new rack...

you gotta understand that a lot of mechanics usually doubles his cost on parts and then bends you over for labor. considering this i'd say they all fall inline pretty well. if i were u id bite the bullet and have it all done at once. with the axle and wheel bearing off tie rods will b easy on the side of that job. u'll most likely save in labor. on the other hand. maybe you should just buy your son a set of wrenches and let him learn how to do some of these things early.

good idea, and partslisted above are way overpriced

Welcome to the forum. I can't comment on the prices because I do most of my own work and try to buy cars that allows me to do that. Most of my cars are older rear wheel drive. I do have a PT Cruiser and two Town & Country minivans that are front wheel drive. I have bought the factory shop manuals as well as the Haynes and Chilton manuals. They all give the repair procedures and the Chilton and Haynes will tell you what is best left to a professional. Many of the needed repairs can be easily done yourself. Do what you can and bite the bullit on what you can't.
