There are.. The passenger side has two kinds, one for the SC engine and one for the NA. The SC version has a larger diameter spline to match the HD trans/HD diff.

I believe the driver side is the same for either. Someone pls correct me if im wrong.

But there was no SC option for 2002. There should only be two axles that year - driver and passenger. Just checked rockauto, and it seems to agree - just those two options.

Yes they should be the same. Are you having trouble fitting it in or getting it to click in?

Which side axle fell out?

Sounds like the retaining ring is broken / missing on that side (which can be the axle itself or the output shaft depending which side). If the retaining ring is there and good, then its receiver hole on the mating part may be broken / damaged.

The new axle pops out? Or rather, YOUR axle pops out of the NEW transmission? Is the C-clip present on the axle? You should feel a solid engagement when installing the axle, im sure you know this. Did it just slip in or could you feel the splines straighten the shaft out? Is there any side to side movement with it in?

Is it possible they gave you an HD trans? It could have been a modification done prior to the seller getting the car.

Examine and measure the old vs. new trans.

You shouldnt have lost too much fluid unless the car was tilted a good bit, maybe a quart.
