Default 81 Monte question

I have the oportunity to buy an almost mint condition 81 with a 3.8 turbo and T-Bar roof. I am not sure if I want a car with only a 3.8 but the price is right. How rare are these 81's and do they hold their value?

Welcome to the forum!

If I remember correctly, that 3.8 is the same engine that was used in the Grand National. And performed very well. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure about your area. But around here, the 4th gen T-top Montes are EXTREMELY rare. Haven't seen one in person in a couple decades. In the 80's, the T-top Montes were heavily targetted by thieves/chop-shops. Many of them ended up stripped for parts before the decade was out. At least around my area anyway. Rust claimed the rest of them.

Be sure to check the T-tops for leaks. They were really bad for that. Part of the reason they quit making them.

As was posted. Check the T-tops for leaks. That can lead to some serious floor rot in cars that have them.

My girlfriend owns an '81 LC Monte. (LC - Landau Coupe)
She hates the 229 V6 in the car. She bought a 2003 Pace car in 2008 with the 3.8 under the hood. One day on the net, I find out the 229 and the 3.8 are bascially the same engine. Sure the 3.8 is fuel injected while her 229 is a 2 bbl carburator. She's always giving me h--l that I always get the faster cars and she always get's the slower cars. But I'll tell you. I love the '03 Pace car. I drive it a lot more then she does. Cause....... wellllllllll...... she's not allowed to drive it.

I'd buy this car in a heartbeat if it was the right price and condition. You will probably never see another.
