Default 1986 ss

So, I know of someone selling an 86 SS, White w/burgandy interior, non-t-top, with 89,000 original miles. Looks like it's in great condition inside and out for a 23yr old car. The owner inherited it from her father who passed away about 10 years ago, so it's hasn't been driven much lately.

She said that the heater works, but the AC does not. There is a leak on the winshield in the lower corner which is supposedly a trait of the 86 MC - i'm guessing it's an easy fix with a new seal.

She's asking $5,000 for it, and i'm hoping to knock it down to $4K. What do you guys think? Is 1986 a good vintage for a MC SS? Is there anything that I should keep an eye out for?

Thank you.

Welcome to the MCF forum. I hope you can get a deal on this Monte, and that she's a good solid car for you.

Bud hit the nail on the head - look closely for rust!!! Check the rear wheel wells (behind the tires), rear frame area, under the doors, the rocker panels and floors, and the front frame horns very carefully if the car has set outside, or it's in an area where they use salt on the roads. '86 is a good year; it should have a 200-4R and 3.73s in the rear axle. Posi is an option, look on the inside of the trunk lid for the SPID sticker; G80 is the code. Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Default Thank you

I'm in Washington state, so there is plenty of rain, but we don't use salt on the roads.

Thank you for the responses. I'm going to try to take a look at it this weekend.

Gaskets, seals, brakes, tranny, coolant(if not pretty green... run!!!), tire rot, under the carpet in the trunk(flood damage), rust, etc, etc.

The pretty much normal stuff you'd look at if you were buying used from a dealer.

picked it up on Saturday. Everything appears solid. Now I need to figure out how to get some budget minded oooomph out of the stock 305. That will be my next thread question.

Thank you everyone for the input
