Leaving the Adam Petty car up there for another week. Texas Motor Speedway was the site of the only Winston Cup start for Adam. He lost an engine midway through the race while having a descent run. His great-grandfather, Lee Petty, was at that race and died a few days or weeks later. Adam himself died roughly 2 months later I believe in New Hampshire. The fact that this was Adam's only cup start is often overshadowed by the other fact that this was also the first win for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Here we go, gentlemen. The first night race of the season, and I am looking very much forward to it!! After an off week to recharge those batteries of counting points, I'm ready to go do it again.

An impressive start to the season for JuniorCar. Now we have to see if he can keep that momentum rolling!!!
This Week
Texas is actually one of my favorite NASCAR tracks. I'm good at it on video games, I like watching it, and it's just all around good fun to go there. I actually think it is better racing than the North Wilkesboro track it replaced. What you are looking for this week is that team with a solid 1.5 mile set up and one that can adapt to a changing race track as night falls.
And it seems to me that more times than not, this race comes down to a long green run at the end with pit stops and fuel strategy playing a big factor in ti. Keep that in mind as you make your picks.... do you want along run or a short run team?
Roush Fenway Racing
This team was solid in both races here last year. However, they can't seem to have it together at the end of a race, that's when you get a few Chevrolets and toyota's in the mix. I may very well go all Roush Fenway this weekend.... I believe that much in this team. They have a solid 1.5 mile program and that engine will really help them on those long straightaways.
Hendrick Motorsports
Quite frankly, this team was struggling on the 1.5's last year and was good, but not great at Las Vegas. I don't know about them, they need to figure out what Stewart is doing with his chassis.
This track is also where Dale Jr got his first win 12 years ago. Jimmie has been hit and miss here, Gordon is bad here sometimes, and Kasey Kahne has so much bad luck.... quite frankly, Jimmie and Jr are the only two Hendrick cars I would even consider a threat this week right now.
Richard Childress Racing
Menard ran well here last year and the rest of the team picked up his 1.5 mile setup. Burton just doesn't have it anymore. Harvick could be a good guy to watch out for at the close of this race.
Joe Gibbs Racing
I don't know what to think of these guys. Logano, in his 4th year, just isn't showing the promise he initially did. Kyle Busch has crashed in nearly every race, and Hamster and Grubb just aren't making those good calls. But Grubb does have the setup that won this race for Stewart last fall. Hamlet is the only Gibbs car I would consider just because of the start of the season those Busch guys are having.
Penske Racing
They are hit and miss. It seems to me though that the teams weakness last year was 1.5 mile tracks. Theyr'e good on big tracks, good on smaller tracks... but those intermediate tracks are just messing them up. I'm not strongly considering a Dodge at all this weekend... .just top 10-top 15 cars there. I want winning cars.
Petty Motorsports
Last year, Petty had some solid runs on the 1.5s along with the rest of the Ford teams. This year, I have to think that maybe it was Allmendinger carryin the torch as both Ambrose and Almirola are running mid pack.
Despite not running top 5-top 10 at times like they did last year, Almirola is a solid top 20 driver more times than he is not.... Almirola is even one spot ahead of Allmendinger in the points.
Michael Waltrip Racing
Suddenly contenders and worth talking about!!!!! They've been great so far... Bowyer might sneak another top 5-top 10 in there while we aren't looking. Mark Martin should be back. However, Mark Martin keeps screwing up on these 1.5 mile intermediate tracks, with that crash at Charlotte last year, he got rear ended by Jr in Las Vegas this year.... Sorry Brent.
My Picks
Very subject to change based up on practice and qualifying rounds... but here we go.
1) Trevor Bayne, first cup start here, won his first Nationwide race here, about to win his first "real" Cup race here without two car bumping.
2) Greg Biffle, current points leader, last years luck behind him, good at Texas
3) Matt Kenseth, solid and steady, ready to win another one.
These gentlemen are 3rd, 1st, and 4th in points right now. The only one I left out was Junior, who was 2nd in points. They are hard to deny drivers right now as they all have excellent 1.5 mile programs going at this time.

I'm noticing a lot of similarity in our picks so far!
Forgot to post this picture for Martinsville. It comes from a 1969 Southern 500 program flyer. It had pictures from some of the races earlier that year, and gave a recap of the 1969 Martinsville race won by Richard Petty in a Torino Talladega.

Anyone here watch Race Hub on Speed Channel? They had some rumors going that since we don't really know how the Penske-Ford conversion is going to work out for either Penske, Ford, or Dodge, a lot of speculation on things. One is which engine will Penske run? The FR9, or something else? Also, no one is on hand to build Dodge engines for next year yet, some think Petty may og back to Dodge (which would sadden me). Another is that Penske may run Ford's, get engines from Roush-Yates, yet still have his own engine department build Dodge engines for whoever the team is next year.
I have to think that is an invitation to run crap under the hood.
