Consideration of a New Rule for 2014

Some of the fantasy sites that do this game have a rule that I would like us to consider for 2014. The rule is that you pick a "Team Captain."

The way the rule would work for us is as follows: you make your traditional 3 picks, but note one of them as being your "team captain." The "team captain" points accumulated during the race will count twice. If you do not pick a captain, I would take the lowest points earner for your team and make them the captain.

For example, if you pick Kyle Busch (who earns 47 points in Atlanta), Joey Logano (44) and Martin Truex (41) as your picks, and make Kyle Busch your captain, then your total would look like this.

Member: 47 44 41 47 179

I feel like this would break up some of the "log jams" in points we get when members pick a similar set of three drivers several weeks in a row.

Or, would everyone just end up picking the same team captain week in and week out? Vote in the poll and let me know.

Points and Congratulatory Remarks

Congrats to Evan for earning his 2nd win of Segment 3 in Atlanta last week! He's gaining some momentum late in the season.

The Segment and Overall leads are currently held by me. But Segment 3 is pretty tight!

This Week in Richmond

Richmond promises to be a crazy race this weekend!! The wild card race is hot, and quite honestly, this race will probably be more exciting than Homestead. For a time with the COT, this track became known for long green runs and uneventful finishes. However, that has changed in the last couple of years to the way ti was in the 90's and early 2000's... crazy finishes, crazy incidents, and a lot of fun racing!

It is even to the point where I think this race is a "wildcard" almost like Bristol or Talladega. Who knows what could happen to your team?

TOYOTA TEAMS

Michael Waltrip Racing

The biggest gamble you can take this week is probably Clint Bowyer. For two weeks, he has thrown down all the cards in hopes of getting a win and busted both times. Is the third time the charm, or will they overthink it and end up blowing an engine or something crazy to that affect? The thing about Clint Bowyer is that since moving to Michael Waltrip Racing, he has more short track poitns accumulated than any other driver in that same time frame.

Martin Truex will probably lean on Bowyer for some expertise this weekend.

Brian Vickers is an underrated short track driver... New Hampshire is a similar track, and we all know who won there.

For that reason, Ithink the MWR stable might be a group to watch out for in Richmond....

Joe Gibbs Racing

The other team that might strike out and dominate in Richmond is Gibbs. They dominated 300 laps of this race in the spring, but late race incidents with commitment boxes, bad pit calls, etc., put Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch in precarious situations that resulted in bad finishes. The 18 and 20 should have both been contenders for a victory though.

Denny Hamlin also missed Richmond in the spring but it's one of his best race tracks. Denny has a better average finish in the Commonwealth of Virginia than anyone! However, his bum luck this year just makes him tough to pick.

CHEVROLET TEAMS

Jeff Gordon is alright at Richmond, and raced his way in last year when the cards were on the table. However, can he really have all that luck two years in a row?

Jimmie Johnson is traditioanlly crappy at Richmond, nad doesn't have luck. I think you're taking a long shot bet to go with Jimmie Johnson this weekend!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a good driver on short tracks and Richmond.

Kasey Kahen is so hot/cold and has wrecked more cars than anyone else in the Hendrick stable. That makes him a tough bet for me.

Richard Childress Racing

Mr. Wheredidhecomefrom Harvick is going to be good this weekend, I believe... providing the can miss crashing into Burton and Menard... which is likely, since he usually isn't even within half a lap of those guys!

Furnitrue Row

I would kind of like to see the "little team that could" race into the chase.. but these guys have never had this kind of pressure on them, and they have messed up pit stops at critical times when the pressure was on just to win... I just think circumstances will prevetn the 78 from getting a good finish.

Stewart Haas

Ryan Newman has slung the whole SWR stable over his shoulder and is trying to pull them along. It will be interesting to see how he does in Richmond too. I do'nt know if we will see Martin or Patrick do well either though.

FORD TEAMS

Roush

Carl Edwards had one of the fastest cars here in the spring, and has had fast cars in the spring race several times... but it's hard to think of how he will do in Richmond. Generally, if he qualifies well here, he will race well here.

Greg Biffle has never won on a short track and it's hard to believe he will start now.

Penske

The "hot hand" for Ford might be the Penske drivers. They've run better than Roush many times, and Brad K. knows he has to win this race in order to be in the championship.... that's the only way to get the points on those guys to end up in the top 10 or to get a wild card place. I think Brad K. might go all in to win Richmond.

His only top 10's here came last year while he was in championship form. The blue deuce will need that "we don't care about the stats" attitude from 2012 to run well at Richmond.

Petty Cars

Ambrose is suddenly running okay... kind of strange. But he is a good wild card to consider.

My Picks

Tempting to go all Toyota's but I just don't like that luck somehow....

1) Kyle Busch
2) Clint Bowyer
3) Jeff Gordon

Dont like the team captain idea. Its similar to what we did at the beginning of last year with the 3 for all. I think it'll just turn into a mess.

Hey Duane I joined this forum to late to play for this year but I plan on playing next year. I like the team captain idea. As it is right now from what I've seen a lot of people have very similar picks. With the team captain idea you could have two players both pick the exact same drivers but both pick different captains thus you will see a difference in point totals. What makes sports and fantasy sports go round is the different aspects of the game that create excitement and drama. This team captain idea would be another way to make this game more exciting. It would also add to a more intense experience as users would have to really ponder who to name team captain. It will make your overall season more exciting too. You may find yourself deep in the standings and then you may pick the right team captain two or three weeks in a row and your team may take off as that team captain would earn you double his usual points. Picking the wrong team captain would hurt but that's what fantasy NASCAR is all about. Can't wait for Richmond I'm going and have hot passes again this year so it should be a blast!
