Default Picks/GatoradeDuels/ThursAfternoon

THIS IS NOT THE THREAD TO PICK FOR THE DAYTONA 500!! THAT WOULD BE THE THREAD LINKED BELOW

https://montecarloforum.com/forum/na...13/#post423284

^LINK^

YOU ARE PICKING FOR TWO RACES THIS WEEK!!!!!

I'll post the list of who is going to be in each race when such information comes available after Daytona 500 qualifying. Just remember to pick for Duel 1 and Duel 2.

Points, Intro

Defending Winners:
Duel 1: Cowboy6622
Duel 2: JuniorCar Brent

Also, congrats to Silverfish33 for winning the Budweiser Shootout!

Rundown

In the thread above, I have quite a rundown already typed, and I don't see the point in typing another one.

I will say this though. I wouldn't necessarily pick the pole winner and outside front row driver for this race. Those two positions are locked in on qualifying day. They don't have an incentive to race. Plus, if they damage their car and have ot go to a back up, they lose that front row starting position for the Daytona 500. All they need to do is be running at teh end. One year, with just a few laps to go, Mark Martin pulled over and let the whole field go by to not tear up his car. Just take your risks accordingly.

I WON'T BE HERE TO POST RESULTS IMMEDIATELY!!!!

I'm student teacing right now, and I won't get out of the school until 3:30 or so, which puts me back at college around, oh, 3:45. The first race is starting at 1:00. I'd imagine mnay of you will be at work at this time as well. If you guys want to know the results before I get here to post them, the best way is a spreadsheet. In column A, put the user name, in B, C, and D, post the results of their picks in order, 1, 2, 3. Then in Column E, etner this formula: =(B1+C1+D1). Then go to Sort, and sort by Column E, including all cells ot the side. But anyway, barring unforeseen circumstances, I will ahve the results for duel 1 up by 3:45, and Duel 2 if it is over at htat point.

77GP gets first call on who is in charge in my absence. So if you want, it's yours to calculate, Jerry.

Also a reminder: I'm leaving the rule in effect that you may still pick the same driver multiple times.

Well, unless your going to pick by starting position like Duane, we can't make picks in this thread until this afternoon. Junior will win 1 Duel

Watching the qualifying right now. Ford made an effort this year to take the front row at Daytona. Their cars aren't overheating, the Chevrolets are. The announcers think the hot temperatures are hurting the power in the GM's on the 2nd lap.

Ford has generally had good cooling systems over the years compared to the General in the street cars, looks like that is carrying over to the race cars as well. The SBC had a good system though. Dodge and Ford always seemed to have that covered.

I think Daytona qualifying should be done without a restrictor plate. What do you guys think? They spend os much time practicing for the Daytona 500, twice as much as any other race, so why not qualify without plates? That would make it more exciting than just who can hold their foot on the floor the best.

This year, the pole speed is fast right now. Carl Edwards has it as I write, with a 194.738. That's really just a few miles per hour faster than in 1968, Cale Yarborough won it with a 189.222 mph, 1969 saw David Pearson run the fastest at 190.029, and 1970 saw Cale Yarborough run a 194.015 mph lap to set the poll, which is right about where Carl Edwards is running now. So basicaly, my Torino with a 429 and the right setup was as fast as these COT's. In 1971, NASCAR set rules requirement on the "aero cars" for the first time and that really slowed them down. Then Bill Elliott ran that 210.364 mph lap in 1987, and it has never been challenged.

I would like to be coming to Daytona for pole qualifying with the intent that we could break records every year. Watching those races from the old days when thye were keeping up with race speeds and setting records year after year was just exciting to see. I'd like to be living throuhg times like that now, where we go to Daytona each year wondering if we will see a new fastest qualifying speed.

The idea behind the restictor plate is to slow the cars down enough that they don't get too airborn when wrecking. And we've seen, guys can certainly wreck while qualifying. The problem when they get airborn is keeping the cars from going into the grandstands. But I guess there are less people in the grandstands during qualifying. So its not as bad when the cars wreck into the grandstand into a small crowd of fans. They got more fans

It's time for picks, guys! The even number starters get duel 2, the odd numbers in duel 1.

I think though that we should avoid picking Carl Edwards or Greg Biffle for these things. By setting the front row this week, their positions are locked pending they finish the Gatorade Duels, no matter where they finish. If they damage their cars, they have to start in the rear. I just don't see where they have much incentive to race right now. I think they will hang around the rear and just ride for the race, make sure they finish, and keep that front row starting position.

I'm getting excited for this season now!!!
