Dover History

Last time, I posted a couple of Dover pictures... and I don't have many new ones, but I do have this shot of Petty in the pits at Dover in 1969. This race was held on July 5, 1969... first race ever at the track. Most of the major teams had been in Daytona the day beofre for the Firecracker 400, but the only major team to send a car to Dover and fly up to run the race would be Dale Inman and hte Petty crew.

Also, most of the major "race reporters" from the day wanted to go cover the major race in Daytona, leaving a lot of people who weren't accustomed to reporting races to go to Dover. When Petty won, a man from the Virginia Pilot newspaper, the Norfolk and Hampton Roads area paper, observed Petty crawling out of the window and asked him why he climbed out of the window instead of opening the door. Petty just flashed his famous smile and said "You're new, aren't you?"

Intro to Dover!

With a boring 1.5 mile and a boring 1 mile flat track down, perhaps Dover can be the shot of adrenaline this years chase oh-so-desperately needs to be exciting, just before we go to Talladega!!! We have to see a few things this week. One is we get anotehr chacne to see how dominant that car Jimmie Johnson has is. Another is we need to see if the Ford's have any speed... they haven't had much going on for awhile.

The Favorites

Like Chicago, this week should be a no-brainer. Jimmie Johnson should be the odds on favorite to win this race. For one, he has that car that won Dover and Indianapolis, it's the same car that dominated Chicago and came up second, and he is bringing it back to where it was christened as the madagascar paint job that dominated the spring race. Plus, he has run 2nd in both chase races so far... and Dover is usually the track where Jimmie gets his roll going. I say one has ot be borderline insane or making a long shot gamble on an issue for the 48 not to put Jimmie Johnson on their team this weekend.

With the 48, I say the rest of Hendrick gang should be okay. Gordon used to urn well here, but he hasn't a won a race at Dover since Bill Clinton was the President of the United States! Dale Junior has won here, but he is losing momentum nad he traditionally falls apart in the chase. I don't see the 88 being a major factor this weekend in Dover, but who knows. Kasey Kahne is alright at Dover, so we'll see how he does.

The other thing is that Brad Keselowski is doing pretty good. He runs well this time of year, and Dover is a good Brad K type of race track.

Some other people should be favorites are not, and I will get into why in the...

Ones to Watch

Kyle Busch is good at Dover... but I upt him in one to watch for a couple of reasons. One, Kyle Busch is great at Dover and won ehre a couple of times, but in the spring. Kyle Busch has NEVER WON A RACE IN TEH CHASE! For that reason, for the rest of the chase, he is at best, one to watch. Engine issues at New Hampshire tell me his bad luck is continuing. And personally, I think the issue has to be osmething in the team because the other Toyotas just arne't having these issues the way the 18 is.

The Ford's should be favorites, but I have ot list them as ones to watch. For one, Matt Kenseth is a lame duck and just isn't performing in this chase. Biffle was on my team at the Dover race here in the spring and he cost me dearly. On top of that, the Ford's just aren't running well the last several weeks. Biffle needs to get something going at Dover to cash in on that "Come Homestead, tehy will be talking about us" thing from when he won at Michigan. Personally, I don't see it happening right now.

Tony Stewart, by his own admission, isn't good here and doesn't really like the place. He has won here ,but it still isn't a good track for him, especially with the COT car.

Martin Truex should be good, but hte last copule of weeks they have been digging their ways out of holes . This is the guys home track so we'll see.

Denny Hamlin should be a favorite, but he isn't that great at Dover. The last year or so, we have seen the 11 run well here.. and he ran great at Bristol, s owe will see how he does.

Clint Bowyer has run well here for RCR, so we will see how that MWR team does for him.

And speaking of RCR, the 29 has to be one to watch.... he is good at Dover, but his team just isn't where it needs to be for him to be contending for wins, at least, I do'nt think it is.

The ones to avoid

The usual ones you would avoid should go in this category.

My Picks

1) Jimmie Johnson
2) Kyle Busch
3) Clint Bowyer

I don'tk now about th erest of them, I really don't, but Chad Knaus has got that team to the top with a pair of 2nd place finishes, the 48 is ready to get some wins and become Mr. 6 time.

1) Jimmie Johnson
2)
3)
Couldn't agree more about "Team Lowes" Dover is a 48 Car Track! As did Mr. Hamlin .... 48 will win Dover! Yep

This will probably work out okay. He doesn't have to worry about pissing off the sponsors cause the owner is the sponsor. I think its a pretty good team. I like Regan Smith enough, but he is one of a handful of guys who's chances to excel should be up.

Solid Hendrick line-up for this race. I'd pick 'em 1-2-3-4 if I could. Narrowing it down to 3, I'll go:

1. Dale Jr
2. Jimmie Johnson
3. Jeff Gordon

Well lets just hope that Dale can pull out a win or at the very least a top 5 this coming weekend, or even bettr the cheating 48 meets the wall this weekend
