Default Picks/Atlanta/SunNight

Points and Congratulatory Remarks

Right now, the momentum has shifted in Devin's direction. MnteCrloSS47's big win at Bristol has given him 2nd in the points, and left me a slim 14 point margin going to Atlanta! Not only that, but that win gave him a 27 point lead in the Segment with just three races remaining before the last "reset" of the season and Segment 4 beginning!

Why I want to win in Atlanta

For the first time in our MCF NASCAR Fantasy, a race will be run on my birthday! I love my birthday because so often, it falls on labor day weekend and I get a three day weekend for my birthday! To win in Atlanta would make a great end to my birthday, plus, it would make this my first ever multi-win season on MCF NASCAR Fantasy!! While Keane and Devin have each won 4 races this year alone, I have never even won 4 races over the three years we've been doing this.....

This weekend in Atlanta

A big thing to keep an eye out for this weekend is the new tire compound that Good Year is introducing. It's only for the right sides as far as I know, and I believe it has a tread pattern to it to help dissipate heat, wear, and help it grip allegedly. I think to win Atlanta, one has to watch practice and see who figures out how to make this tire grip over the long haul without blowing them out.

Also, this place hasn't been repaved since Bill Clinton was President of the United States.... so I look for teams and drivers who are very good at managing tires to dominate in Atlanta on Sunday night. Also, with it being a night race, a mans record at night has to be taken into account.

CHEVROLET TEAMS

Hendrick Motorsports

For 20 years, the team that has proven it can adapt to changes the best and consistently proven it is up for change is Hendrick. Therefore, I suspect the Hendrick cars will be tough to beat on Sunday night.

Jimmie Johnson is a crap shot at Atlanta. Jimmie might win the race or at least post a top 5, or he might have some bad luck and crash, blow an engine, or something to that affect. He had a great record here in the mid 2000's, winning 3 races. With himself being locked into the chase, he is probably going to go all out for a win and may end up in a crash, or in victory lane...

Jeff Gordon has a pretty stout record at Atlanta. He has run 1st and 2nd here in the past two years, and has a good string of top 10's goign throughout the 2000's. I think Jeff Gordon is another guy to watch out for in Atlanta this weekend. Plus, he knows he needs a win or a very solid finish to be in this Chase!

Kasey Kahen has two wins here, but in his past three races there has run in the 20's and 30's. But with Hendrick behind him, he could just win the race with a little luck...

Dale Jr. was very good in Atlanta until about 2007. He ran in the top 10 a lot there until then, but since has found himself in the teens a lot... except last year, hwen he ran 7th.

Richard Childress Racing

With the exception of 2011, when Harvick had a vibration late in the race, he has a good string of top 10's going at Atlanta. Harvick is good at managing tires, and that's a big deal in Atlanta.. .I look for the 29 to run well.

Burton and Menard always seem to have fast cars lately, and run well in the race.. but both of them are just so prone to bad luck and bad timing by pit stops and bad strategy, that they're just hard to pick.

Stewart Haas

Newman ran okay at Bristol, and Mark Martin just got the car home in one piece... but I don't look for the team to dominate and win. I think they're just trying to survive the season and wait until they can bring in Kevin Harvick and maybe Kurt Busch to dominate in 2014.

Earnhardt Ganassi

This little team is hard to judge... every month or so, Montoya comes out of nowhere to have a great run. So does McMurray. But will that great run come again in Atlanta?

Furniture Row

The "little team that could" out of Denver, CO just can't catch a break. They have everything they need, and they'll probably run up front for a good portion of the race.... but a mistake on someones part, bad luck on the track, a bad pit stop, etc., something is going to put this team behind....

Kurt Busch has acouple of wins in Atlanta with Penske and knows how to manage the car there.

TOYOTA TEAMS

Joe Gibbs

The second best team at adapting to change is Gibbs. This new tire compound could be throwing the Gibbs cars a looop like e veryone else, but they spring back better than everyone else right now too.

Kyle Busch ran dismally at this track back when he was with Hendrick, but since coming to Gibbs has a win and a few top 5's here. However, he is inconsistent, with some finishes being in the teens while otehrs are top 5. This year, Busch seems to run pretty consistent, but has had some bad luck in the last couple of races as well.

Matt Kenseth seems to be the man on 1.5's this year... he had a good car at Charlotte, won Kentucky and Las Vegas, among others... But since they moved Atlanta to night, Kenseth has run 11th, 9th, and 9th. I don't know what to think of the guy.. he might dominate and win with the Gibbs camp or he might run 10th again. Plus, in the last several races, Kenseth has been kind of inconsistent...

Dennis Hamster just can't catch a break right now... I really wonder if he needs to step aside and get that back surgery.

Michael Waltrip Racing

Clint Bowyer isn't known for his 1.5 mile track prowess, and Truex hasn't scored a single top 10 at Atlanta since moving to MWR years ago. I don't look for this team to do much damage in Atlanta.

FORD TEAMS

Roush Fenway

Carl Edwards summary of Atlanta is like this: if he doesn't have a crash or blow an engine, he will run top 5 at Atlanta. Without exception... except those two times he ran 7th.... or had an incident. Carl Edwards is just that good here... I remeber he was leading in 2008 when he blew an engine. The catch is that Roush doesn't seem to adapt well to changes anymore, and a new tire compound is coming out this weekend.

Greg Biffle is great on these 1.5's that wear tires out too. Howeveer, his last few outings at Atlanta didn't do so well...

Ricky Stenhouse will be making his Cup Series debut at Atlanta.

Penske Racing

Brad Keselowski is tough in Atlanta too. He was running top 5 when Carl Edwards sent him airbourne a couple years back, had one bad finish after that, but since then has a 3rd and a 6th place finish! The team seems to be getting some of their mojo back (except Bristol) and will be tough going into Atlanta this weekend, I believe.

Joey Logano needs a decent run to keep himself in that top 10 in points.

PEtty

At Bristol, the team had some "mojo" back and ran decently all night. Hard to say how they'll do in Atlanta though.

My Picks

1) Jeff Gordon
2) Carl Edwards
3) Martin Truex, Jr.

I just don't know... I'm torn between Johnson, Harvick, Kenseth, Edwards, and Keselowski though....

I think the 48 is trying different things for the chase, despite what they say. But its hard to say they will have 3 bad races in a row. I am pondering some more till I pick.

Traditionally, Jimmie runs like crap between Indy and the Chase....
