THE BIG STORY
Kurt Busch led more laps in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway than he did during the entire 2008 season. His Penske Dodge Charger was in front for 234 of the 330 laps to take the victory by .332 second over Jeff Gordon in a green-white-checker finish. Gordon is 43 points ahead of Clint Bowyer (sixth).

Also: Ross Brawn assumed ownership of the Honda Formula One team. Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button will drive with Mercedes power… Chad Reed (Supercross) on a Suzuki and Ben Bostrom (Daytona 200) on a Yamaha were weekend winners to wrap-up Daytona Bike Week.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Mark Martin claimed his first pole since May 2001 at Richmond with a 187.044 mph lap Friday at Atlanta. Sunday, Reed Sorenson brought out the first yellow when he got into the wall on lap three. Bobby Labonte spun in turn four. Kurt Busch took the lead on a long green flag run. Caution came for a bizarre reason when a Marcos Ambrose crewman ran onto the grass area separating the track from pit lane to recover a loose wheel. Busch made an extra pit stop to see why all the gasoline wasn't getting into his Dodge's tank.. Jimmie Johnson led on the restart but Carl Edwards motored past soon thereafter. The next yellow came when Labonte's engine broke and he spun. Busch resumed up front. Sam Hornish Jr. and Bill Elliott tangled. With 110 of the scheduled laps to go, Martin hit the turn-two wall and finished 31st. Busch was back in front with 75 laps remaining. Nine laps later, there was a yellow for debris, and Johnson was penalized for being too fast exiting the pits. He finished ninth. Scott Speed, Greg Biffle and Jeff Burton were involved in a front straightaway incident. In the closing laps, debris from Robby Gordon's car caused another yellow. Busch, second running Brian Vickers, Jeff Gordon and Edwards pitted. Edwards took only two new tires and came out first. There were five extra laps and Busch easily cleared Edwards on the restart. Jeff Gordon overcame clutch problems to finish second, followed by Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Vickers. Busch did his victory lap in reverse gear. He averaged 127.572 mph with 11 cautions for 54 laps.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
Poleman Kyle Busch didn't have second or third gear for a restart with eight laps to go and fell back in the field in Saturday's American Commercial Lines 200 at Atlanta. But Busch's Toyota powered back up to the front and he passed Todd Bodine with five laps remaining for the win. Kevin Harvick's Chevrolet led 68 of the 130 laps but lost track position when he pitted on a late yellow when Colin Braun was bumped into the inside backstretch wall. Harvick was runner-up, .122 second behind. Bodine was third. Busch averaged 130.183 mph with five yellows for 19 laps. He's 25 points up on Bodine..

Racer of the Week
Martin Truex Jr. Finished 10th at Atlanta one day after being hospitalized for kidney stones. His crew also had to replace a battery during the race.

Default Gordon to run retro scheme

Retro Pepsi image at 'Dega for Gordon: The year was 1983 when Darrell Waltrip took to the track in the Pepsi Challenger Chevy. Waltrip had won back-to-back titles and was trying for three in a row when PepsiCo changed the primary sponsor on his car from Mountain Dew to its signature brand before the season. Waltrip failed to win the title that year. At Talladega, Jeff Gordon will go retro with Waltrip's 1983 paint scheme on his car.(gordonline.com), see an image there or on my #24 Team Schemes page.(3-10-2009)

sounds cool, i love the retro paint schemes you see once in a while. loved jr.'s retro mountain dew scheme last year.

i wouldn't doubt it. he's been on a tear so far this year. i think he lit a fire under his crew's *** after last season.

definitely can't wait to see the car at 'dega. always one of my favorite races of the season!!

Top 35 Owner Points Countdown: Four Down, One to Go

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 10, 2009) – The developing picture of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will become clearer at the conclusion of the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 22.

That’s when the use of last year’s final car owner points to determine the top 35 weekly guaranteed starting spots ends. Starting at Martinsville Speedway March 29, the current owner points determine the top 35 guarantees.

And so, during this off-week for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the “bubble” is big news looking ahead to Bristol.

The reason for that, is this: Some major NASCAR names are hovering way-too-close to the cut-off, starting with the out-of-retirement Mark Martin (No. 5 Kellogg’s/Carquest Chevrolet) whose Hendrick Motorsports team sits in 35th this week, merely nine points ahead of the 36th-place team owned by Chip Ganassi, the No. 8 Cub Cadet Chevrolet driven by Aric Almirola.

Four Race Suspension for stroll on Frontstretch Lawn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 10, 2009) – Jimmy Watts, a crew member for the No. 47 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has been suspended from the next four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events (until April 22) for rule violations during last Sunday’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

VIDEO LINK: http://www.nascar.com/video/cup/2009...car/index.html

Watts was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 9-15-U (crew members must not go on the race track for any reason while the cars are racing or while the cars are running under the yellow flag or the red flag, unless otherwise directed to do so by a NASCAR official). Watts has also been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

Busch Bros Go Back to Back

Back-To-Back Busch: Brothers Take Act To Bristol’s Short-Track Theatre
Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch have won the last two NASCAR Sprint Cup races and after this off-week it’ll be on to Bristol Motor Speedway, there the Busch Brothers have excelled in the past.

Consider:

Kurt – the 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion – has five NASCAR Sprint Cup wins there, while Kyle has one.

Overall all, the brothers have combined for 32 victories in NASCAR’s premier series – Kurt with 19, Kyle with 13. That’s the sixth-best sibling total of all-time. Bobby and Donnie Allison lead with a combined 94 during their storied careers.
