THE BIG STORY


Kyle Busch and Scott Dixon were the weekend's headliners. Busch's Toyota had handling and brake problems and some troublesome pit stops, but he led the final 74 laps of the Dodge Charger 500 at Darlington Speedway. Dixon, with a four-lap average speed of 226.366 mph, earned the pole for the 92nd Indianapolis 500.
Also: Johnny West was named crew chief for Jack Beckman's Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger Funny Car, replacing Rick Cassel… Chevrolet unveiled an all-new engine for USAC's Midget series, to be used by Tony Stewart Racing drivers Tracy Hines and Levi Jones, and available to other teams through independent engine builders.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series


Greg Biffle got the pole at Darlington with a 179.442 mph lap. Jimmie Johnson, who crashed twice in practice, qualified third. Biffle led the first lap Saturday night on the repaved Darlington oval, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. took over on lap two. The yellow came out right afterwards when Elliott Sadler pushed up into Tony Stewart. On lap 12, Sam Hornish Jr. got the wall. Kyle Busch's Toyota took the lead on lap 18. On lap 40, Busch brushed the wall for the first of several times (he wasn't alone) and Biffle's Ford went back in front. Busch went to the lead on lap 71. On lap 126, Busch punted Biffle sideways, but Greg recovered and took the lead for one lap, until Busch went back by. On a debris yellow on lap 140, Busch's crew had the first of several lug nut problems, and a NASCAR penalty made him restart in 23d place. Biffle slowed on lap 196 and pitted with what he thought was a transmission problem. He came back out and, on a pit sequence, got back into first place. That was brief as he soon retired, after leading 95 laps, and finished last. After a yellow for Brian Vickers' wall visit, and another for debris, Busch went around Jeff Gordon for the lead. With 66 laps left, Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin had contact. Busch won for the third time this season, by 3.1 seconds over Carl Edwards' Ford. Edwards started 36th. Jeff Gordon was third, followed by Earnhardt Jr. and David Ragan. At 23, Busch became the youngest Darlington winner. He averaged 140.350 mph with eight cautions for 31 laps. He led 169 of the 367 laps. Johnson finished 13th and Stewart 21st. Busch pushed his advantage over Jeff Burton (10th) to 79 points.


NASCAR Nationwide Series


Tony Stewart got his first career win at Darlington in Friday night's Diamond Hill Plywood 200. His Toyota Camry led 90 of the 149 laps and finished .814 second ahead of Clint Bowyer's Chevrolet. David Reutimann was third in a Toyota. Poleman Carl Edwards crashed twice in the first three laps and finished last. Kyle Busch crashed after contact with Brad Keselowski. Stewart averaged 107.139 mph with eight cautions (and a red) for 36 laps. Bowyer jumped to a 112-point advantage over Busch (31st).


IndyCar Series


Teammate Dan Wheldon, at 226.110 mph, and Ryan Briscoe, at 226.080 mph, will join Scott Dixon on the front row for the May 25 Indy 500. The rest of Saturday's qualifiers were: Helio Castroneves, Danica Patrick, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, Vitor Meira, Hideki Mutoh, Ed Carpenter and Tomas Schecker. Sunday's second day of time trials was rained out, as were practice days last Wednesday and Thursday. Rookie Alex Lloyd crashed in Friday practice and didn't return to the track for the first weekend. Danica Patrick's car clipped a Dale Coyne team crewman entering the pits Friday. Charles Buckman was hospitalized with cuts and a concussion. Ryan Hunter-Reay crashed Saturday but was OK.


Formula One


All four winners of the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul have come from the pole and it was no different Sunday. Felipe Massa finished 3.7 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton, with Kimi Raikkonen third. Massa's Ferrari controlled the event except for pit stops. Raikkonen is seven points ahead
