Arrow NASCAR Update + More 3/16/09

THE BIG STORY
On a non-NASCAR weekend, NHRA took the spotlight with the ACDelco Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. Larry Dixon got his first victory for the new Alan Johnson Al-Anabi Top Fuel team. Bob Tasca III, Jason Line and Hector Arana were the other pro class winners.
Also: Jimmy Watts, the Marcos Ambrose crew member who caused a yellow at Atlanta by running onto the grass separating the pits from the track to retrieve a wheel, has been suspended by NASCAR for four races… Alex Lloyd will race in the Indy 500 in a Sam Schmidt team car run in cooperation with Ganassi Racing… The IRL will provide up to an extra 45 minutes of practice for rookies and teams outside the top 10 in points on the first day of practice, starting at Long Beach. Another change will have the driver leading the most race laps getting a two-point bonus and the pole winner one bonus point… Legendary Manzanita Speedway, in Phoenix, will be sold for development.. The World of Outlaws' event there March 28 is still a go but the last scheduled racing night is April 11… Jason Meyers won the Outlaws' Mini Gold Cup Saturday night at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif.

NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Larry Dixon got his first win for an owner other than Don Prudhomme Sunday with a 3.898 second, 311.05 mph run past Cory McClenathan in the Gatornationals finals. Cory Mac went a tire-smoking 4.570, 192.60 mph. Dixon qualified No. 1. Antron Brown leads Brandon Bernstein by 20 points. In Funny Car, Bob Tasca III's Ford Mustang went to the winner's circle for the first time when Tony Pedregon's Chevrolet Impala started to lose power. Tasca clocked 4.200, 280.72 mph to Pedregon's 4.536, 210.90 mph. Jack Beckman qualified ninth in the Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger and lost in the first round. John Medlen missed another race as Mike Neff's crew chief as he continues to recover from a heart ailment. Ron Capps, trying for three straight wins, lost in the first round but tops Tasca by 38 points. In Pro Stock, Jason Line's Pontiac GXP got a holeshot victory over Allen Johnson. Line went 6.614, 209.20 mph to Johnson's better 6.607, 209.01 mph in a Dodge Stratus. Ron Krisher qualified 14th in the Valvoline Chevrolet Cobalt but lost in the first round. Line is 57 points clear of Johnson. In the season debut for Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hector Arana's Buell sailed to a 6.977, 191.40 mph win over Matt Smith's 7.133, 185.51 mph on a Suzuki.

Valvoline Winner Last Weekend Larry Dixon, NHRA Top Fuel class, Gainesville.

Racer of the Week Bob Tasca III. With a long family heritage in drag racing, he wins his first Funny Car race, from his first pole.

Yes, He REALLY Said That Ryan Newman, asked if he had to box another driver, who would he choose as a fair opponent. " …just due to my height, my weight and everything else and just because I think he is a scrapper, I think Jimmy Spencer would be a heck of a boxing match. He grew up around a junkyard; he has got to have some fight in him… Plus I know he has thrown a few punches before."

This Weekend NASCAR is in Bristol for Saturday Nationwide and Sunday Cup short-track racing. Members, get ready to pick the TOP 3 for Sundays Race : ) ALMS opens at Sebring.
