Default Daytona 500 Purse

NASCAR News, Videos, Scores, Standings, Stats, Teams - FOX Sports on MSN ... n-19639983

19 (NINETEEN) MILLION DOLLARS, 1.4 of which goes to the driver!!!

As for it being the record purse... I certainly don't see it getting smaller anytime soon. Wonder if these figures are adjusted for inflation though. I asked my friend at RCR why they do all these little tricks for hte Daytona car, such as clear coating the decals in and block sanding, polishing, nad waxing the car, why they put so much more empahsis on tolerances for the Daytona car when there is such a big chance that car is going to get crashed by an incidnet outside of your control. He said that since it is the biggest race, it's the one everyone wants to win (which I understand), but said it was really the purse for htat race versus the rest of them, winning that race can carry the team financially for the rest of the year. I didn't realize the purse was that big though!

Lee Petty won $19,050 for the first daytona 500. In 1997 Gordon won $377,410, the next year It jumped up to $1,059,805 and it's been up that high ever since. JJ Yeley finished in last place and made $268,550 maybe we should get a car together.

Thinking about those numbers, Gilliland was probably able to finance his whole team's operation last year when he finished 3rd. But I don't know if it paid so much last year. There is a $200,000 mid race bonus this year which is a great idea to keep these guys racing and not just cruising until lap 190. Should probably be more bonuses throughout the race

There used to be a bonus for whoever led at halfway... if they won, then they got like a $100,000 bonus or something
