Race Recap: Johnson Wins His 'Crazy' Eighth, Cuts Points Lead to Nine

HAMPTON, GA. – Jimmie Johnson won a wild-and-wooly Pep Boys Auto 500 here Sunday afternoon.

A bizarre series of circumstances in the final 20 laps of the 325-lap event led to Johnson's storybook finish and eighth win of the year.

Johnson was lined up behind race leader Denny Hamlin for a green-white-checkered flag finish.

The white starting flag waved and every car took off, every car but one.

Hamlin's car was out of gas and he rolled slowly down the center of the track like an unlucky duck at a shooting gallery.

Cars went on both sides and sparks flew. Jeff Burton scraped the outside wall and Martin Truex Jr., unable to see Hamlin's car stalled out until it was too late, buried the nose of his Chevy in Hamlin's rear end.

On the restart after the caution, more trouble ensued. Shortly after the cars took the green, the left rear wheel came flying off Dale Earnhardt's car as he entered the turn. He slid up the track directly in the path of oncoming Jamie McMurray, who delivered a KO punch to both cars at speed. That signaled the end of the race.

Neither driver was hurt but the crazy finish sent NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series officials to the monitors for a scoring rundown. NASCAR uses every tool available in determining the running order at the time the caution flag is displayed, including visual, video and scoring loops around the track to determine the final rundown.

OTHER STORIES ON THE DAY

-Martin Truex Jr. led the most laps, but rammed into the back of Denny Hamlin on a restart after the 11 stalled coming to the green.

-Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a top 10 in his sights, but a wheel flew off his #8 car and he pounded the wall taking Jamie McMurray with him.

-Chase driver Tony Stewart had oil pressure problems with his #20 machine, he ends up 30th and drops to 5th in points, 322 back.

TRACK STATS | TEXAS
Race #8 in the Chase for the Championship
Distance: 1.5 Mile Oval
Banking up to: 24º
Miles/Laps: 501 mi. = 334 laps
Last year's winner: Tony Stewart
Earlier this year: Jeff Burton
Up for grabs: $7.2 million and some chase points
Gordon leads Johnson by only 9 points heading into this weekend, to make things interesting...neither has ever won at this track
Cup Series Racing @ 3pm Sunday on ABC
With only three races to go, time is of the essence for the Chase drivers to make up every point they can on standings leader Jeff Gordon. All 12 Chase drivers are still mathematically eligible for the championship, though Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are setting a devastating pace. The Hendrick Motorsports teammates have won the last four races in the Chase and have the closest point margin between first and second since the Chase’s inception in 2004.

Two more hurdles for those not named Gordon and Johnson: 1) Only Johnson has come back to win the championship (2006) with three races to go. 2) Gordon and Johnson are showing no signs of slowing down. Gordon has five top fives at Texas, one win and eight top fives at Phoenix, and three top fives at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Johnson, not far behind, has three top fives at Texas, three top fives at Phoenix, and two top fives at Homestead-Miami.
Gordon / Johnson have not won at Texas (believe it or not)Sunday’s Dickies 500 represents a personal hurdle for standings leader Jeff Gordon and second-place Jimmie Johnson. Neither has won at the 1.5-mile truck just north of Fort Worth, and both experienced frustrating performances there in April.

Texas is one of only two tracks where Gordon, a four-time series champion, hasn’t won. Homestead-Miami Speedway is the other track.

In April, Gordon’s encounter with an outside wall limited him to a fourth-place finish despite leading a race-high 173 laps.

He has five top fives and six top 10s at Texas.

Johnson finished 38th at Texas in April. He has three top fives and six top 10s there.
[:-]Don't 4-get 2 post your Picks : )
