Default Whine noise on acceleration, check engine light

'05 3.8 LT 60K miles

When accelerating I hear a whine from the front end of the car.

If I accelerate slowly there is no whine, but the harder i press the pedal, the louder and sharper the whine gets.

If I put the car in nuetral and rev the engine I do not hear the whine noise, regardless of how many RPM the engine is doing.

My thoughts ar that this is a tranny issue, and I'm wondering what might be wrong.

I did also just install a K&N filter, and thats when i noticed the problems withthe whine and the light. I think the light is likely a problem with the O2 sensor, likely coated in oil from the filter.

did you put an K&N filter in, or an K&N intake kit?

Okay, can you try to explain the whine a little more?

The more detailed you are, the better some people can diagnose.

What's it sound like? Where does it sound like it's coming from?

Well, if i lightly press the pedal, there is no whine, however if a pass a certain mark there is a clear whine, almost like something spooling up. as soon as I let off the gas, the noise is gone.

Is sounds to be coming from the front end, towards the left side.

I'll try to get a recording of it if i can.

power steering maybe? I know I had a bit of a whine from it, and the gp owners have it too...

So I have an update, I am unable to get a decent video of the noise, but did get the code read for the CEL, it is a Large Emissions Leak. What would cause this, and is it the kind of thing that I could possibly fix?

I dont know about the emissions leak but the noise you describe sounds like the transmission pump. Mine does it too. Not quite sure what the problem with the pump actually is, but ive heard a few people have had the same problem.

That's what I was thinking I hadn't noticed it before, so hopefully it's not a sign of the tranny going south. I'll check the fluid on it and report back.

hard to tell from hear if its the same noise but if it is the whine is common...sounds like a turbo spooling. as for the code...did you do anything to the exhaust?
