Default Tranny fluid/filter change & weird noise

What tranny fluid seems to be the best and does it really take 7.8 quarts like the book says? I have a 04 3.4 with 64,000 miles. My tranny makes a weird scraping/grinding noise when its manually shifted into first and sometimes in first gear in (D) but not all the time. Any ideas?
Thanks

hey welcome to the site

7.8 quarts would be if you do a complete flush..which most people dont..they just drop the pan and fill it up again...but this doesn't empty the entire system(doesn't empty the torque converter)...just about 1/2 of it...so you will need about 4 quarts

and i would reccoment royal purple max atf fluid...this is what i will run when i change mine...i'm already running their oil since i got the car

Dexron VI is the new trans fluid
You can use it in older vehicles, it is combatable with all other dexron fluids.

Is the pan gasket reusable?

gasket should come with the filter
You should always replace a gasket after it has been used

remember you must change the o ring inside the filter or in about 2 weeks youll have to flush your system again.

Anyone know thetorque specs for the pan bolts? ACDelco part number for the filter would be great too
2004 SS supercharged 3800

Modern cars have plenty of reusable rubber gaskets, last transmission I worked on had a reusable rubber gasket. Cork andRTV sealantis the way of the past.

Rubber and proper torque for the win.

ive wroked on a lot of cars and ive alays had to change the gasket, but anyways everytime you buy a new filter it gives you a new gasket so why wouldnt you change it anyways. Just to be safe

When i did mine a month ago i had a gasket that i re-used because it was ribbed and it was also metal with a ruber coating on it and the directions said that came with the new filter said to re-use the gasket if it was like the one i had.
