temp guage and loud noise
sometimes when it is cold my 01' will make a horrible nosie, I think the nosie os the fan motor ? Also when I shut the car off, the fan stays on, but it only does this when the temp guage isn't working, i have had some kind of sensor changed but it didn't fix anything, but like i said before, it doesn't do this all the time, but lately it has been happing more often than not, what could it be?
the fan staying on would be the coolant temperature sensor, whats the noise sound like???
having your thermostat and coolant temp sensor changed might get rid of all of everything
you wouldn't think that the coolant tem sensor causes so many problems, but it does, on my truck it caused it to run rough and never start properly, its an easy fix and a cheap fix
i would try that first

I have had the coolant temp sensor changed, and the problem was gone for like 1 day, but then it started doing it again! thanks for the advice though!

I'm having that same issue with my car. But my Check engine light comes on after a little while.
And when my temperature gauge isn't working...the cooling fans go on. Probably because it's a malfunction and the computer turns the fans on to be on the safe side.
What does the noise sould like and where is it coming from? Is it a quiet noise or a loud screech like a bearing going loose. Is is a gurgling like there isn't enough coolant?
I replaced my Coolant Temperature Sensor in hopes of solving the problem...
....obviously it was NOT the problem. I brought it to Advanced and they put it on the diagnostic and it gave an error code that made the guy believe it WAS the temperature sensor. So I got one for 10 bucks and installed it (which was a complete mess might I add since there's almost NO room to replace it.)
Well, it's installed and the Temperature gauge STILL does not work and I still have the CE light on.
My next guess is that it might be the thermostat....or the WIRING to the temperature sensor.

Definately swap the t-stat. Make sure you bleed the line then to make sure the coolant is all the way through the hose so you don't have air.
A trick I did in removing the t-stat was to take off the radiator cap and the resivoir cap. Then squeeze the hose to force the coolant back into the resivoir. This can be very tricky, just do it slowly and apply light pressure at first. Then I opened the bleeder valve to get air, released the pressure, closed the valve and repeated.
When you take of the T-Stat housing you are going to still get fluid all over the place. Also the T-stat has a rubber gasket around it, I used a long thin screwdriver to pry the T-stat out.
Good Luck.
