Strut tools 96 MC

Strut tools 96 MC
I will keep this short. My mother needs struts on her 96 Monte. I picked up a Chilton manual last night to get an idea of whats needed to replace them and it mentions there are a couple "special" tools required. My question is can a guy with above average mechanical skills but only an average set of tools (ie mm wrenches, sockets, torx, spring compressor etc.) take on this project without the "special" tools? Or are the special tools affordable and I should just buy them any way? Oh and does the entire strut assembly have to be removed or can the struts be removed with the springs still attached?
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

RE: Strut tools 96 MC
I assume u r talking front struts. U need the special tools, these r cartrigde struts so the spring and alignment are not affected. Alignment may need adjusted anyway, though so always a good idea to recheck. I work at a competitor but I'll say it anyway, AutoZone rents this tool. It's a pretty straight forward job. The hardest part is probably prying the bushing up and out so u can get to the strut.

Thanks for the info. Are the rear struts pretty straight forward or are there any special tools for them? Also what is the tool called for the front struts? Id hate to go to the store and say "you know the special tool thing".lol You always look smarter when you know the name of something.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Soory to take so long, I usually go to the other Tech threads.
U need GM tool, Branick GMW594. Used to remove the Cartridge Struts found on the fronts of "W" body GM cars. Rears r a little easier to do. And OTC makes the same front strut tool. Just ask for a cartridge strut remover. I'll try to post pics of mine in a little while.
