Too bad I love this car. It's ridiculous that Chevys have this problem. Impala's Malibu's Monte's Trucks etc. First nice day, I'm gonna attempt putting a new shaft in myself.

we both drove.. was last summer and it was hot.. probally shaft expanded from the heat and the noise was gone. but, its been back.. I'm gonna try and replace it myself. I got the directions and it doesn't look that hard to do. wish me luck.

I have 05 monte carlo LT with 72,000 miles. Does anyone know if GM will cover the ISS under a warranty? I was told mine needs replacement..

There is a thread that explains how you can grease it yourself for a very cheap fix.

GM will not recall it, it is not a safety issue for them. Just an annoyance.

My dad's 2000 Pontiac Bonneville had the steering shaft problem but never got it fixed. My 03 Monte has it but I probably won't bother to get that fixed either - again not a safety issue, just an annoyance. Luckily (knock on wood) my 05 SS doesn't have that problem.

After I greased mine at home, I haven't felt anything from it for 3 months now.

They might replace it if it was never replaced before. Theres a Gm service bulletin about this problem.. I'd just tell them its been making the noise and progressively getting worse. I did a Google search on replacing this and
If your handy it doesn't look like that hard of a job to . Soon as the weather is better here in NJ I'm gonna give it a try myself. The new part number is 25829293.
