Default Replacing burned out instrument cluster light

My wife's 2002 MC has had a burned out light in the instrument cluster for a while. While replacing the ignition switch today, I also pulled out the instrument cluster to check it out.

It looks like the tiny instrument cluster lights are a permanent part of the circuit board, soldered in place. Is this correct? If so, any suggestions for either fixing the one bad bulb or replacing the instrument cluster circuit board?

I believe the bulbs soldiered in are similar/same to the ones that are operate the back light of the LCD panel on my Grand Am radio. Way back when, I found a YouTube video noting how to take the radio apart AND the part number of the bulbs from Radio Shack.

Another option is LED upgrade. Check the link below:

Thanks! I was looking on the BB Engineering site earlier, but stopped when I got to the 'Due to a change in circumstance, the BBEngineering Store is currently closed' message. Apparently I can't buy anything there now, but looks like the how-to info is still available. I'll read up on it and see what I can do.

Yeah, BBEngineer closed up shop (the era of money to be made for him with the Montes and Impalas has come to an end). I'm just glad his "How To" stuff is still out there. He's got some great info! I plan to use his info to add the driver information center to my wife's Impala and my Monte soon (I have the units and made my own "t-harness" for them).

Hey fellow Yellow Monte owner, these are what you're looking for. This site has a bunch of great factory replacement bulbs that are pretty hard to find, specifically if you have a burnt bulb with a blue cover on it.

Handy site. Thanks for the follow up. I personally want to look into LED replacements. They use less power, last longer and don't usually build up heat like incandescent bulbs do. But at the moment, I have no need to mess with any of it.

like Jason mentioned...its easy to do yourself. tedious due to the led bulbs are polarity specific so you have to know that.. but doable. if you do led's you can do custom color too if needed. there are some guys you can send your cluster to have it done. ive done several. ive noticed some chinese led bulbs don't last as long as I would have thought

Hi there, if you are replacing bulbs with the same type you will want to change the stepper motors too, because they will go. The bulbs and/or motors are soldered in on this 6th gen. There are two kinds of stepper motors -- you will want the upgraded ones, I have forgotten the number. Very cheap. I ordered mine on ebay I think, a couple years ago -- 5 or 6 steppers and bulbs for less than $30. if you're handy at soldering I don't think it's a big job.
