So sincei bought the car i have been getting my oil changed at a local VW dealership never really looked at the paperwork as i know alot of the techs and lube techs (why i go there) and with the warrenty i have to take it in to get it changes becuase i need documentation

This last time i notice my car has been getting 10w-30, kind of baffled and not sure why i pop the hood and discover the oil fill cap says 10w30 on it

i always thought these got 5w30 no matter what


i don't mind 10w30 for the summer months but plan on changing over to 5w30 come winter for sure to help with the extreem cold we get here in mn

so did they change it in the area the car was bought? or did earlier ones require a thicker oil? just wonder why it says 10w30 on it, when working on my boss's 04 MC SS his say 5w30

 

In 2003 they made the change to 5w-30 on the L36 I believe.

You are fine running 5w-30 or 10w-30 in the car at any time. It's JUST the cold start weight that is different, nothing else. I run 5w-30 in all of my cars, personal preference.

 

I run 5w-30 I read it in the manual for my LS which also had the info for the L67 in it (so I kept it since the 05 didn't come with a booklet) and have run 5w-30 since owning a Monte. I always read in the manual (if not avaliable I go online) which is prefered. My dodge trucks all took 10w-30 so when I bought the Ford I assumed it was the same, good thing I read the manual because it calls for 5w-30 also.

 

I know i can switch at any time i just thought it was odd that it was 10w30, i'll probably swap the cap with the intigue's it's 5w30 and it burns some oil and when i was running 10w30 in it, it burned less

I do a lot of oil changes at the shop. We have a bulk tank of 5w-30. And that's what we use in nearly everything that calls for 5w/10w-30. I just put the cap specified weight on the sticker when I print it.

It's nothing to worry about, because you will never be able to tell a difference. Anything you notice is only placebo.

The cap says 10w30 on my 2003. All the cars I own state 5w30 or 10w30 is acceptable in their owner manuals. I prefer 10w30. I definitely wouldn't run an weight not acceptable according to the owner manual.
