Default New to forum, finally got my dream car

So ive been looking for a 73-75 monte carlo for about 2 years now. I had a gmc van that I redid last winter and was asking about the same price as the dealer with the monte had on it. I did a straight up trade, I got a 73 landau with factory a.c., it was a one owner old lady owned car, seats and headliner perfect,no cracks in dash, 128000 miles, rebuilt tranny. Dealer put a new carpet kit in it. All the gauges, dome light, cig lighter, everything works except the clock. Its a immaculate car, the vinyl top is shot of course, and the paint has seen better days defiantly but its a rust free Montana car for the most part. I drove it 5 hours back home, even in a snowstorm, and the thing did great, floats like a boat.

Thanks everyone, I live in Idaho. There are alot more clean cars here than where im from in the rust belt.
I noticed that the tranny has been leaking when I drive, getting all over underneath the car, which has me worried because its a fresh rebuild and looks clean other than the fluid on it. Also this is my first vehicle with a carb so I know nothing about it, looking forward to learning. When I floor it the car sputters and wants to die. It starts like a champ and idles good. Ive done the seafoam trick to clear it out and it smoked alot so I know I got some out!!

Thanks again. Got the tranny looked at. The mechanic put a new seal around where the speedo is hooked up, but he said there are other seals that might be leaking to around that area, but of course got home and it leaks like before. So looks like its going back to the shop.

Nice ride man. Is it a 305 or 350?

I recommend a complete exterior cleaning on the transmission. Get a couple cans of brake clean. Wipe the transmission down first, then spray it up good with the brake clean. Let all the residue come down, let it sit for a minute then wipe up the excess. Put a clean piece of cardboard under the vehicle.

The transmission will leak a few ways. Not-running, idling in park, running while driving, after shutdown. You should be able to see a trail of fluid from the source now that the transmission is clean. Let it sit overnight after cleaning and see if anything leaks out over an 8 hour+ period. If nothing, run it for an hour and then shut off... let it sit for another hour and check. Common places: Tail seal, pan gasket, dipstick seal, TV cable seal... all can be easily changed. Eventhough the transmission was rebuilt, can be overlooked depending how thorough a rebuild it was. Good luck.

There are a couple of areas notorious for leaking on the TH350 transmissions. The speedometer cable is one. The dipstick tube is another, especially if the transmission is a little overfull. Something else that could have happened during the rebuild is that the front pump seal was nicked when the torque converter was installed. I've done a 4 installs on my own cars and a couple on friends and have about a 50% success rate. I'm sure that I'd be better at it if those repairs came along more often than every 5 years or so.

The carb issue might be an accelerator pump. Depending on how long the car sat, I would recommend a simple rebuild. The 2 bbl carbs aren't that difficult to go through if you have reasonable mechanical aptitude and are organized. Tuning on the other hand can be an art ...
