Default Monte Carlo Steering Tightness Question

Ever since I owned my 2007 Monte Carlo LT, I thought the steering seemed tighter than most vehicles. Does anyone else share that thought with me? Someone I let drive my car said that it felt good to them with the tightness and made me want to test other cars. Sure enough, the Monte Carlo was the tightest.

Don't worry, it will loosen up as your suspension starts to get crappier :P

Doesn't sound like a problem to me! That's what I like about my Monte, the responsiveness in the steering and ride. Try adding some strut tower braces, THEN it'll be tight!

A review I read online said it was a negative about the Monte having hard steering. Not sure why that would be considered a negative. Most people prefer hard steering. I like it myself. It makes it feel good and solid.

Yes, the steering on the Monte is pretty solid. But i've driven cars with much tighter steering. Like my dads Mustang GT for example...I personally think the Monte is a good blend for everyday spirited driving, but its not the greatest handling car in the tight twisty's. Although, it does well, but its not like a sports car.

I agree with you Michael. I sometimes feels like when I back out of a parking spot or turn around on tight road that I am being hard on the steering system. Is the steering system strong or should I be concerned that hard turns will break the system. You mentioned you had to replaced your power steering pump. How did you know it was going bad? Are there any known issues with Monte Carlo steering systems?

Default .steering

.....The steering issue that I have with my 05 SS ( 58,000mi ) is that there is a slight clunk or vibration in the column. But it's not
constant. I've read on other "threads" that this can be easily
repaired . What is the issue with this ?
I'm still learning about these cars.
Thanks.
Richard.

You will know if the power steering pump goes bad, because you will start to get a whinning noise when your accelerating. The whine will continue to get worse the longer you go on...

I've never heard anything bad about the steering in these cars being bad. Power steering pumps, and greasing the steering column are the only problems that seem to be somewhat common with these cars.

Problem with my 2008 Chevrolet Impala
Mileage = 44051
Engine size 3.5 V6
GM tech = JK
question = Well.. Say I want to pass someone. I get into it, RPMs go up. and I hold it there
for a minute. After i park it and let the car idle, I hear a, like a whine, or "power steering"
whine, but its not the P.S. It won't do it when you turn. After letting sit and idle, if you rev a
little, the engine whines, and gets louder. Any suggestions why my Impala is doing this?
Thanks!

JK:
Be sure to check the trans. fluid level. Low trans. fluid can give a whine noise that is
related to engine speed. You may need to remove the serpentine belt after you get the
noise to start. Then re-start the engine and see if it goes away. That would indicate one of
the accessories on the drive belt is the culprit. If it does go away, then re-install belt. While
it is whining, you can use a stethoscope to try to isolate what is making the
noise-Alternator, water pump, A/C compressor.

Thank you for the tip donation.
This sounds like a very common problem in many years and models of GM vehicle.
The "Intermediate steering shaft" is noisy and needs to be replaced.
Since you have under 36k miles, this item is under warranty. Just call your local
dealer and tell them your problem, and they will take care of it. There is actually a
service bulletin (TSB) for this.
Thanks again for the tip/donation. I will send the TSB # as a reference so you can
bring to the dealer if you would like.

There is a lot of complaints online about this clunk. I guess I have this too look forward too along with the power steering pump.
