Missing the resistor key
I bought a great little 96' Montie and it drove great, then i lost the key and have no way to get a new one cut since the GM dealer wont cut a key for a car older than seven years, I also heard that you need the key to replace the ignition switch? If so, is there a way to remove the ignition switch by way of the steering column?
Thanks in advance guys! cheers! Jacob |
First, find another dealership. I know a guy that had a brand new key cut for a '91 Cadillac like 5 years ago. As long as you have proof of ownership, they should do it.
I am not familiar enough with the ignition switch on a '96 Monte, but I am sure if you can find the shop manual, there is probably a way to pull the lock cylinder out without the key. But if the issue is you just need a new key, press the dealership. And if that dealership won't do it, ask for a manager and if they still won't, go to another dealership. The car is old, but not that old. |
Do you know where I could get a shop manuel?

You can order one (I believe Helms Publishing makes them), Google search or hit YouTube. Someone may have posted the info you need (may not be for a Monte, but another GM with the same design).
I'd still push for the dealer to cut a key if a key is all you need. |
This thread is very misleading, the poster is referring to a 96 Monte Carlo and the title has 7th gen (06-07) Could a moderator get this into the right section/gen list. A moderator even replied to this.....:congrats: Keep up the good work guys/gals.
