Personally I would never use a chemical to try to stop a leak. Most leaks are pretty easy to solve and only requires a gasket or seal, usually less than $30 and a few hours of time.

I also would personally never use any "stop leak" type of treatment. That being said, the scrap yard I frequent also does a little work on my cars when I dont have time and they threw some stop leak in my Firebird's transmission about a month ago. The plan was to replace the trans soon after so he thought, "why not" I guess. It was a "stop slip/stop leak" something or another. The stuff worked so well that ive put off the trans replacement until I get a failure. I had a horribly hard 1st-2nd shift and a leak that was dumping about a quart a week into my driveway both of which this stuff "fixed".

All that being said now, I still would never choose to use it but theres proof it can work.
