Have 2001 Monte Carlo that has been idle for a little over a year. Had opportunity to finally work on it and discovered the sepintine broken. Was a simple fix but discovered why it broke. The belt tensioner pulley was locked up, replaced the complete assembly. Put battery charger on and opened the car door and the car alarm went off. Put key in ignition and turned to on position, alarm quit. I turn the key to start position and there is nothing. All electric functions appear to be in working order but engine still won't turn over. I did pull on sepintine belt to make sure the crank would roll and it does.
Confused, need help!

Since it was sitting for so long you really need to make sure all of connections are still good, make sure the grounds didn't get dirty.

Even though the battery tender is there, there might not be enough juice to do the crank.

i have to x2 this

doubble check that the bat conections are not corroded, check the grounds

i would let the bat get a good charge in it, and if it still does nothing you may want to look at trying a different bat,

also stock alarm or aftermarket?
do you get a security light?

I was wondering this also. You may need to do a security relearn. Turn the key to the ON position and leave it there for 11 minutes. Turn OFF for 30 seconds, then turn back to ON again. Repeat this for 3 cycles of ON/OFF then (if this is your problem) the vehicle should turn over and start.

Hey thanks for giving me places to check and how to relearn the system. I had already cleaned the terminals, may just need a new battery. I'll let you know how I come out on it as soon as I have time to get back to it.

It might not even need a new battery, the one now could just be low, you said lights and everything come on, that leads me to believe it may be okay.

Is there a clicking or anything when you turn the key? If not you may potentially have a bad ignition relay.

Check your battery cables and grounds, especially near the starter. It could also be an issue with the vehicle anti theft system

Question

Simple replacement of the battery was all it took. Now I have a new problem. The windshield wipers operate fine when turned on, but when I turn them to the off position, they stop in the upright position.
Any ideas?
