Refresh my memory. ISS is... the Security System right? What exactly is wrong with it?

ISS= Intermediate Steering Shaft... it's the shaft between the rack & pinion and the steering column.

I did mine with the grease kit GM sells for it for $8 my cost (like $12 normally, I believe) and under an hour of my time.

I sometimes felt it when braking but mostly felt it when turning. I put it up in the air and checked the front suspension and everything was good. So I did some research and found out about the common ISS problem. Bought the grease kit, greased it up and it's been fine since.

I get an occasional thud sound when I am braking and slowly turning. Just another thing to tell the dealer.

I had mine replaced for me in my '01 SS. They are ALL crap from what I'm told, and hard to find a new one. Good luck on the fix, but if fixed early enough, it should work. I'm told that the manufacturer used the wrong grease when they were built. My 2 Impalas were both re-greased. The splines in this require too tight of a tolerance to feel right. Just a crappy design.

And of cource GM won't admit this...... I had mine replaced around 25k, and was told at the time the entire truck line had the same problem..

So what happens to the ISS over time if you don't re-grease it?

BTW: That RocknSS ID looks familiar.... 2KMC?

Great write up! So you simply leave the shaft uncorked? Also, do you use the entire content of the grease injection? Also any higher grade grease that we should consider?
