ok so I replaced the t stat on my girls Monte Carlo, along with the tranny filter....I didn't flush the.entire coolant system, just topped it off...well it was doin fine for a day. I then noticed it had a ghetto upper rad. hose, so I change.that and again topped it off with dex.and .It ran fine for half the day Nd then tonight started gettin really hot, all the way to the red...and I notice the coolant don't seem to be circulating, or a bad t stat, it's a 3.4 2000 ls. so what can I do before I put it another t stat. how can.I.bleed the system and when I bled it.do I bleed it with the car running? any help would be greatly appreciated!

 

Sound like you still have air in the system. Sometimes it takes a few bleeds to get all the air out. If you know were your bleeder valve is, use that to bleed the system. Also, is it possible you put the T Stat in upside down? If all this fails then you may just have to do a flush!

 

It's a pain to get all the air out sometimes.

 

Should be a bleeder on the T stat housing...

When you bleed it.... Bring it up to running tempature... Turn it of and and carefully and slowly open the bleeder. til fluid starts to appear...tighten it..re start the car build up pressure (maybe run it for a cpl minutes... Turn it off and repeat the process... You may have to do it as many as 10 times... Never ever try to bleed the air out when its running...

Once the air is bled out...your system will circulate again...


What happens is the air pocket blocks the flow.. thus runs hot and over heats. That's why its critical to get all the air out of the system.

 

Huge and time consuming problem bleeding the air out, took me over a week to finally regain heat in my car!

 

thanks for the help!!! I wouldn't know what I'd do without y'all. I guess I got lucky I bled it once off bleeder and everything is perfect, I also squeezed the **** out of the lower/upper hoses. now I gotta do wheel bearing. anybody got a link to a write up how to,and would that explain why the inside of tires are wearing bad!

 

You prolly still have air in it I bet. A couple days after I thought I was done it over heated again one morning and there still was so much air in it I was in a partial shock! The inside of your tires wearing out is due to a bad wheel alignment. Get an alignment done next time u instal new tires since the ones u have now are no worth saving.

 

One Bleed is never enough! I had to do mine 3 or 4 times before it stopped overheating and Gurgling at me! You'll know you got it when you only get a steady stream of coolant from the bleeder for about a minute!

 

Don't forget to refill the radiator after bleeding.
