Hi, Havent been here for a bit, but maybe you can help me.

We have a 41 Chrysler Street rod that needs a front end rebuild.

I contacted the guy that built it, 30 yrs ago and he said he made it with the front suspension of a 70 Monte Carlo, I never believed that as its way too narrow.

I have looked a 70 Monte cross members and it doesn't look the same


I called him the other day and he said it may be 69 Nova, but I was at a show this weekend and looked at a 68 Nova, it wasn't even close, but, there was a 75 Nova there, I looked underneath and it looked like a perfect match

Can any of you guys help? I am sure that GM used most of the same stuff on all their cars though.

I googled the part number of the Pitman arm pictured and it comes up as a 68-69 Chevelle/Firebird/Camaro, so possibly a Nova too, but it doesn't look like 69-70 Chevelle either.


I tried the caliper pictured but it didn't come up as anything, do the pictures look familiar to anyone?

I also tried posting on a few Nova websites, any ideas, thanks everyone, pictures included.

 

the camaro, firebird, and nova run the same suspension. thats about all i can tell you about that. the chevelles and the monte run the same suspension. i agree with you that the monte and abody stuff should be a bit too wide for that car.

Im guessing though....
He used a multitude of parts to get the steering to work...So its probably a Mixed bag of components....

Id be curious to see where they stubbed up the sub frame...form the donor vehicle... Cause in the pics.. it looks like a full frame that was used...

The only true way to find out what kind of parts were used...would be to find the part numbers off each upper and lower control arm,springs,tierod ends etc etc....To know exactly what its made from....

Whats so, throws me for a loop... is how short the upper control arm is vs how long the lower control arm is! Thats some crazy geometry!
Those knucle turning spring things in between the coils definately gotta go!


Back in the late 60's to early middle 70's Gm used a lot of user friendly interchangeable parts... Youve definately have a puzzle to solve...

I wish I was more help... (Being an old school guy) I thought maybe I could honestly tell you what its from... But I dont recognize any part other than that Pitman Arm...

You may wanna consider going to an old Style Mustang II style front end and useing rack in place of the steering box pitman arm setup?
You might be pleasantly surprised to find the wheel base may just match up!

Possibly measure up the bolt pattern at the wheels to see what size they are to match it up also.... If its all GM front end components... Check what models and years that bolt pattern matchs up with... That may give you an exact match also....

I know 1968 to 1974 Nova sub's are rear steer that's what I have on my 1940 chevy.. 1975 Nova's are front steer maybe he use 1975 + Nova or
someother GM subframe.. Go to junkyard an look at some GM sub's..
