Default change oil light

It looks like during my last oil change who ever did it put 5w30 instead of 10w-30 i was wonder if this why my change oil soon light is on? I've barely went 1600 miles since oil change and light started coming on since last week.

5w wouldn't affect it. Whoever changed your oil probably never reset the light.

x2. Mine did that a couple of times - so now I just reset the light after I have the oil changed because most shops don't think to do that.

I think its a timer and not a sensor like some high end cars. Click here and refer to 2002_Black_ss post. It works and will reset the light, did it a month ago on my car.

Do most people use 10w in their montes? I guess I never thought about that, I use 10w-30 in my truck but 5 in my car.

I swear mine does too! I'm like 100 percent sure it does because I'm a worry wart about my car and always check into what to use before doing anything lol.

pretty sure all monte's take 5w30. 10w won't hurt anything, just a thicker oil. but probably not the best to use in colder weather, unless the vehicle calls for 10w.

the older generation oil lights are based off of how many times you start the vehicle, how warm the vehicle gets on every trip, RPMs on every trip, and other engine readings. that all determines when the car thinks it needs an oil change by how much abuse the engine takes.

newer generation(06 and up MCs and Impalas) use basically the same method, but give you an oil life percent. where as the older montes and impalas just turn the light on when it's time.

i personally still go by the general 3 months or 3k miles. and i probably always will too.
