Does anybody know to rechare their own air coditioner ? I heard that the compressor must be on . How do I do that ? Also what hose do I hook it up to ? If any body knows please help me. I am in Las Vegas and the heat is unbearable. i hae a 2000 Mont Carlo SS 3.8.

 

i take it u have a leak? it is pointless to recharge it if u do. it will only leak out again. take it somewhere and get it fixed

 

x2, these systems are supposed to be leak-free and not lose any freon.

You have a serious problem if you are low on fluid.

 

I don't have a leak I just need to recharge it. It gets cold but not that cold...

 

It does not wear out. There is no need for a recharge without a leak.

 

well if you find out that you do have a leak i coul've sworn that i saw a sealant for that. im not 100% sure.

 

What's not TOO cold?

A/Cs are only supposed to get the temperature outside, minus 20°

So if it's 100, you should be getting 80 at max.

 

May want to recheck your source. We consider 30-40* cooler than ambient temp to be good cooling. For example, GM specs 55.4* max output at 80* ambient in our montes.

 

Kits with and without sealant are readily available from any parts store and it is ridiculously cheap in the US. Once the hose is hooked up, you charge the system with the engine running, A/C on full. It takes only a few minutes and its easy to figure out the hose because the quick connect on it won't connect to anything but the correct "low side" port (this does not mean that it is located down low).

 

JuniorCar is spot on here. It's simple to find rechargers at the auto parts store with "conditioner" or sealant in them. Simple to recharge them too - you might need a couple of cans, or one might do it. I used to put a couple of cans in my truck about every other year. I could do that for a long time before it cost as much as the $400 to fix the A/C at the dealer.
