Default '86 vs '87 Monte SS speedo

does anybody know why the '82-86 SS speedo's only went up to 85MPH, wherea's the '87 SS speedo went to 115MPH? and would the '87's go up to 115MPH before the limiter kicked in? thanx all.

Not real sure why, but it seemed that most of the cars back then only had 85 mph speedos. Alot of them had trouble getting that fast!!
The Montes didn't have any limiters back then other than lack of horses, mine would make it up to about 120-123 or so bone stock. Just didn't have anymore.

With the SS being the top of the line so to speak, they put better things in it during the 1980s. I'm sure the same is true for the 1970s as well. As for the '00-07 SS models, they generally got more equipment versus a lower model. In 2006 I believe the LTZ was top of line, not SS. And the sales brochure as well as the dealer album seem to back this information up.
ex. LTZ got a sun roof as fartory installed equipment. SS had to be ordered with one.

The 1980s 85mph speedo in the lower models was probably due to Chevy wanting you to buy an SS is you wanted SS equipment. I do know and have personally seen lower models with the full gauge package. Like our '81 LC (Landau Coupe).

Do you know besides the 85 and 115 speedo heads there was also a 140mph speedo for the 1980s Montes? I've seen them. Had a chance to buy and '85 SS with one. The seller wanted $1500 for the car. I knew he didn't give that mush for it. I offered $1,000. He turned it down.

NMCOA did a feature on a member from Mexico. He owned an '85 SS with a 4-speed in it.

I found out in 2004 from another Ohio member you "Could" still buy all the parts at GM to do a manual swap over in to your 4th generation Monte even in 2004. All the parts are for the '78-80 Montes as they were offered with a 3-speed manual transmission.
