It depends what your end goal is, but keep in mind, cars of your Monte's generation were not commonly modded back then. As a result, most any mod you would consider doing will probably require a lot of custom fabricating. But if you want to stay with a v6 and put the time/effort into it, you could end up with something unique and awesome. Just look at the Grand National, a turbo charged 3.8L v6 and it surprised a lot of people I think in it's day!!

If you are looking for cheap and powerful, switching to a Chevy 350 is a great way to go. It's a common engine, lots of aftermarket stuff and just the engine swap along and you'll have a ton more power.

Food for thought.

BTW - Share some pics of your car and projects!! We love pics here.

And Welcome to MCF!!

I went from a 305 to a stock 350 out of a truck and couldn't believe how much better it ran. I found an old chevy truck wrecked for 300 bucks and took the motor out and put right in place of the 305. Of course, with a throttle body 4.3 car, you can put in a throttle body 350 and leave it fuel injected easier than if you were starting with a carbureted car. You already have the gas tank/fuel sending unit, gas lines and all the wiring for fuel injection. That would be the easiest way to gain a lot of horsepower in your 86. V6's can be modded but try looking for parts for late 80's to early 90's model 4.3 S-10. They're a little more common and the engine parts should interchange. I'm not 100% sure they interchange but it's something you could check out.

nothing is really wrong with the engine besides a little tune up to change worn parts. i have 98x,xxx miles on it. i am on a tight budget being a student but can spend about 4-600 a month on parts. i dont care much about power i just wanna make sure my engine is healthy and running without any problems, i want to keep this car forever thats why i want better parts rather than stock.
How much does it usaully cost to change to a 350 engine? i am having problems finding part most are for the 5.0 v8 and wasnt sure if it is worth investing in my 6. this is what my MC looks like now. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

That's a nice teaser pic of your Monte.

BTW - I meant to say (and did not say), v6 engines of your year were not commonly modded.

As for parts, if you want better then the run of the mill parts sold at the corner stores, you can try performance shops, like Summit Racing. Honestly, I don't know what the cost to drop a v8 would cost. But if you are considering a 350, it does not have to be from your year Monte (which GM I don't think ever put in). Just look for a Chevy 350.

U was looking at summit racing website and most of their parts are for the v8..im gonna look onto the chevy 350

Most 4th gen owners consider even the 305 (plus 305 H O) engines these cars came with nothing more then boat anchors.

You can mod the 4.3 v6 and get deasent power out of them.
You can get headers and true duals and a can you can get a edelbrock intake to go with a 4bbl
And you can get hei ignitions.
That's a mild build
