70 Monte Carlo 1st gen
A number of new issues popping up as I try to bring this lady, back to as new. I have issues, mostly electric, headlights work, as do parking, no brake lights, looking into the breaker underneath pedal, wiper motor, second one ordered from Auto Zone, correct fit, all electric showing and switch good, no action from motor (p.s. 1st motor, was the wrong one, worked actively). Recessed or non recsesed? I ordered recessed it looks right, but all power on, no movement?
Brake lights not working, brake light switch? Is what? looked under brake pedal for switch, not sure what to look for? Finding a repair manual or what to look for or to expect?
Instruments lite, nada! I get idiot lights on dash for all but overheat with fuse in, fuse out, i get the overheat light on board? What's with that? The radiator does have issues, filled it with radiator fluid water, warmed it, and after running had to add another gallon. Assumed thermostat, OK?

It sounds like you may have a lot of little problems that are adding up to one big headache. Since most seem to be electrical I would purchase a repair manual (with wiring diagrams) or visit the library and make copies of the wiring diagrams. Then comes the tedious part of checking and tracing wires...
What part of Seattle are you in? I'm in Seattle also...

I agree, with the possible pitting in relays and old wiring, it will take some sleuthing. The only repair manual I could find was a Haines which covered 1970-86. Too wide a spread for me. I have found a lot on line, including wiring diagrams. She had a rebuild about 50,000 miles ago, and quite a few modifications were done then.
Just moved to the S. Everett area after teaching up in Skagit for the last fifteen years.
In for an interesting time on this. I need to replace the turn signal switch and fix the brake light problem immediately so she is road worthy and tear into the dash later for the instrument lights etc.

Joe:
The brake switch is behind the brake pedal (The brake pedal actually touchs it via a tab off the brake pedal)... It should just be a little white plunger switch...(the whole switch is about the size of a ladys lipstick container) It mounts right to the steering column via a clip... it slides in and out of a slot. Heres what the switch looks like click the below link.

Your Monte also has 2 Flasher switchs.. 1 for emergency flashers and another separate one for turn signals.. (Both are under the dash.)
As for the wiper issue....
You may have to replace the wiper switch in the dash since they don't seem to be running/parking. Do the squirters work? If not...Maybe you need to replace the whole complete unit and not just the motor?
The idiot light issue for overheating...
You just need to replace the temp sensor in the intake manifold... Maybe consider changing it from an "idiot" light to an actual manual gauge?
I don't know if you have checked the tail light bulbs for the brake light issue. It uses a dbl filament 1157 bulb. You may just need to remove the bulbs and clean the contacts in the socket or the bulbs... (Maybe both) or just go ahead and replace the bulbs.
I believe that should cover most of your issues...

Super thoughtful and helpful! I can't thank you enough.
Going after the brake switch today, I know the turn signal switch is bad, have one and a wheel puller, but if memory serves, I'll run into a plate that needs a second tool or set of hands to press down to remove a ring, the rest is fairly straight forward (though she has a tilt steering column).
I'll keep you updated after what progress I can get done today.
Thank you again, for the schematics, other additions and the time it took to put this together.

Many electrical issues resolved, but two that are driving me nuts....literally. I needed to replace the wiper motor, in the process, I discovered the wiper switch was bad. I have burned out two wiper motors, I have a new wiper switch hanging, not connected to the dash as getting to and replacing it, seems a mystery. I noticed the switch has what appears to be a prong that grounds the switch, a work around? or suggestion, short of pulling the whole dash apart to get to it?
