2002 gear shift problem

this is my first post so bear with me. I have just been reading alot of the other postings. But my problem started about a month ago. without warning I got in my monte trying to put the car in drive it seemed hard but it went into drive with a litte harder pull. After getting where I was going the gear shift wouldn,t return to neautral, reverse or park. Then after letting the highly skilled alley machanic look at it,he lost a little plastic clip that looks like it was made for adjusting the cable.cant find that anywhere, even with the cable disconnected from the trans the gear shift in park the cable seems to be about a half inch to shortany suggestion to this problem I tired of going under my hood to change gears. and thatshard to dowhile driving lol.thanks in advance I LOVE this site.

RE: 2002 gear shift problem

Welcome George from IN to the MCF family.
I had similar problems with my '01 SS LE. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it for not much. I didn't loose the plastic clip, but the shifter was not working correctly. Your's sounds a little more serious, tho. I'm guessing it's the shifter tho and not the tranny, if the tranny SEEMS to be working OK.
