2001 Monte Carlo SS Alarm System
Well, I was not aware initially that the car came equipped with an alarm system upon my recent purchase of it as it was not mentioned. Upon reading the manual, I eventually have confirmed that the factory alarm is, in fact present by checking the radio and arming/triggering it through the trunk with my key.
So, the problem is that the alarm is not functional when an attempted entrance is made by either the driver or passenger side door while armed. I assume this is abnormal.
I am not sure where to start, after having reviewed every fuse and correlating purpose in my manual. Did I miss something? Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks for any and all replies. If I solve this problem I will be sure to report back here for future reference if anyone else runs into this type of issue.

On my 01, the horn will repeatedly sound when the alarm is activated and the door latch is pulled. I assume when you say the "radio", you are referring to the blinking red light that indicates that the alarm has been activated.
Are the doors actually locking when the alarm is activated? If so, the first potential remedy that I would try is to reset the alarm system and see if that solves the problem.

The blinking red light on the radio is NOT for the alarm...that light is for the theftlock on the radio itself.
If you are using your key to unlock the door, and them opening the door, your alarm is not going to go off. These cars have a feature called Passlock. Therefore your key has a chip in it, and when using that key to unlock your door, it also deactivates the alarm. The factory alarm does not require you to use the key fob to deactivate it. Both the key, and ke fob will deactivate it.

As for your question, no I am not unlocking it first before attempting to open either of the doors. I do know that the manually specifically mentions that if an entrance is made with the key while armed through the TRUNK (not the doors) that it will sound the alarm. I did this and an alarm went off, confirming that I do in fact have one equipped, just not working correctly.
The doors are locking when the alarm is set (I can't open the doors when I attempt to make an entrance after locking). So, I am going to try to go out and do a reboot through the radio, although I fear there might be a reason why they aren't working like maybe there was a passlock problem somehow which I've heard is common. I'll get back to you guys and let you know if a simple reset works, I should have thought about that earlier.
Anyways, thanks for the imput guys. I'll try it out.

Reset sounds like a good place to start....
When you are testing the alarm on the doors, this is the way I test it...Roll down the windows, lock the car using the key fob (I think it set using the power locks too) and then wait a minute (I think really its 30 seconds, but just give it a full min). At this point the alarm should be set. Now reach through the window, and manually unlock the door (do not use the power door lock switch, or the key fob) then open the door from the outside. The alarm should go off at this point if its working properly.

I have a 2001 Monte SS
Well my key fob remote worked when I came home from work and locked my car. When I went to unlock it it wouldn't do anything,it won't even open my trunk. I put in a new battery and it still doesn't work. Is there some sort of procedure I must go thru to get it reactivated? Could there be something wrong with the receiver unit? I have know idea where that is.

the 05 silverado i had came with the alarm system.....it showed a double padlock on the instrument panel....from what the dealer told me was when you lock the truck by pushing the key fob twice the horn will beep twice to set. If someone breaks the glass or uses a slimjim to open it the alarm will sound and kill the engine.....nothing will work until you access the unlock through your factory coded key fob. He said the fobs are set using the software they download from GM. It does work I left the drivers window down when i hit the pwer lock button the horn sounded in seconds and it would not start untill i unlocked it with the key fob

So if I use my key to unlock the door and the alarm goes off, that means I need to reset the stereo? My red light is going off. Replying bc I have that issue and I was also curious if anyone knows if this problem connects in any way with the check engine light code p101, since my MAF sensor is just fine.

You mentioned the owner's manual so refer to pages 2-15 and 2-16. If your alarm does not activate/deactivate following those instructions then it is malfunctioning.
Actually, the red light on the radio is for the alarm system. It will be on solid, flash slowly or flash rapidly depending on the state of the alarm system.
Theftlock works by matching the VIN the radio has stored in memory with the VIN stored in the PCM memory.
