Hi everyone,
Newbe here, just curious if I go from 16" to 17" wheels/tires what will I have to do to get my speedometer recalibrated?

there isnt that much of a change so it really dosent matter..... i go from 18 to 19" and there dosent seem to be any difference. if there is is so slight and it would be mayby like 1 mph faster.

You can get 17" wheels and tires that are the same overall diameter as your stock 16s. My 17" mustang bullit wheels and tiresare within a half inch of the diameter of my stock 16" z34 wheels and tires.

 

When you go with a bigger wheel. The overall diameter of the tire will stay the same or be real close.

For expample with the 16's your tire size is 225/60-16
If you go to 17's the tire size will be 225/55-17

The bigger the wheel the smaller the sidewall on the tire.

I have 17" on my 06 Monte Carlo.. You know something, maybe it's just me, but I do like the look of them but ever since I got my 06 with the 17's, I feel less in control when I'm making turns on wet pavement or on snow.. My 03 SS with 16's, I felt more in control, the 06 LT with 17's I feel like I'm more loose.. And I do have the same brand and tread pattern of tires on this one.

I don't know if the 03 SS had a stiffer suspension than my 06 LT.

 

the handling of the cars seem very different to me too

my parents have an 06 SS, and on a windy day their car feels like it cuts right through the air a lot better than mine. But in the snow I feel my car handles a little better.

 

I have 17's that I use in good weather (off during the winter), and there really isn't a change inthe speedometer.My monte handles very well in the snow, I think it has something to do with the weight of our cars.

Any change in the speedometer will depend on the overall diameter of the tires that you put on the wheels. How much it changes depends on how close to the original diameter you stayed. But if you end up with a taller or shorter tire I've been told that if you take the revolutions per mile to a dealer that they can reprogram the computer to recognize the new diameter.

I chose a tire with less sidewall when I switched to 18s for the summer months, this meant that overall the tire diameter is very close to stock and therefore the speedometer and odometer are correct. However on my stock 17s I have a set of winter tires that are too small and cause a bad reading. So it really depends on you're tire size, not your wheels. Well unless you have wheels that are bigger than the original wheels and tires were, but then you'll get into worse problems than the speedometer.
