06-07 Monte - Has anyone replaced speakers with factory amp??

I've read that if you have the small factory amp under the rear deck, you can't upgrade the rear speakers. WTF?
Is this true?
Has anyone comeup with a work around?
Can the amp be replaced?
Can just the fronts be replaced if the factory amp is under the rear deck?
