I have always had an affinity to Alpine R and S series and never have problems.

Realistically I would just goto Best Buy and pick up something there. They may not have the snooty premium, but they will have reasonably priced equipment that sounds great. I've personally never been able to tell the difference between a $200 and $800 sub yet and the same with amps and headunits. Like I said I said, I like my Alpine equipment: it is reasonably priced and high quality. In fact it has only been in the last year that I changed head units. Previous I was moving my 92 tape head unit between cars and had it hooked up to a cd changer.
For quality I stand behind it because I had a dash fire in my first car due to a faulty ignition. It had flames shooting across it and to this day still has scorch marks on the metal casing. The flame wasn't too hot because the plastic didn't melt, but I did have to clean the fire extinguisher foam off it. It still works great to this day and I'm thinking of putting it into my 2000 Blazer I picked up a few months ago. I just don't know if I want to mess with it as the stock stereo is good and the truck is only used for towing and winter driving.

yah the old phoenix stuff is really good, now the phoenix fat boy sub is amazing
but they're not gone, they're subs are still very good as long as you dont get into the low end ones
personally i like alpine type r the most
but you get what you spend, pyle is very cheap so dont expect anything that great
its the same with rockford, they used to be a good name, they still are good, just not as good as they used to be
every company has a different line of subs, they have a high end sub and they have a entry level (cheap) sub just for the guys driving the 200$ car with the loud bass in it, you get what you spend though
i think my choice would be alpine type r subs again, or if i had the money the jl 13w7 (but that is really expensive)

I like Rockfords and JL's, but my brother is a certified car audio tech and whenever he builds a serious system, he uses Concept competition speakers. So far, he has been responsible for 6 show winning systems. Everything is custom from the ground up, no prefab boxes.
I asked him about Pyle and he said: "Pyle who? Oh...Pyle...they're still in business?" Followed by a laugh. Yeah, he's a sarcastic *****, but he knows his stuff.
