Quick question that I hope is not too off topic-I'm looking to be able to manually select a gear, not "up to" that gear as you can stock. Will a ratchet shifter allow you to do this? If not, is there anything and what is it called? (I've always called that a "bump shifter" but google doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about...)

If you want to row your own gears, you'll have to do a full manual swap. You can actually search, people do them on w-bodies with the Getrag 284.

If you aren't happy with how your car is shifting, a tune might be your best bet.
